Compatible fan speed controller for MAX FAN 12" inch

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone out there is successfully using a MAX FAN 12 inch with a fan speed controller without any issues. I called Can Fan and they say it will only work with their own fan speed controller which is over $300 because this particular fan uses a diff motor than the rest of their fans! Trying to save some money and get a cheaper controller that is less than $300 but I haven't found any info online of someone confirming that they are using a compatible controller with this fan. All I've seen is 'it should work', etc. Hope someone can help! Thanks!

I advise against that fan. Look at centrifugal style inlines. They deal with static losses in ductwork much better.

A variac based speed control is best as the electronic ones cause motor groan at reduced rpm.
