ill be short but direct. im just looking to see if anyone has anything to say about what im about to start with. i plan on germinating in peat pellets then transferring to pots, that i still have to get. i have 400w mh and hps bulbs. 4" inline fan(170cfm) with carbon filter. ffof soil and nutrients(grow big, big bloom, tiger bloom) using a 36"x30"x4' home made grow box lined with mylar. i plan on having an opening in the bottom area of the box for fresh air being pulled in with the fan ducted out the opposite end. its in my bedroom and the outside temp holds pretty steady at 70 and right now is about 30% humidity running the heat. I was going to do the normal ,i guess, route of veg and flower but came across a thread about starting 12/12 lighting from the door with great results and am more leaning toward that cause of space restrictions. sooooo whats up? is this gonna burn down my place or should i be ok? oh and im starting off with decent bag seed ive come across. i only saved them cause it was decent but i got a decent amount too. thanks in advance yall

welcome to the forum mj...we need pics or it never happened!! thats an awful small setup for a 400.. might think bout a 250. but you are gunna HAVE to go 12/12 from seed w/ that height!!

its possible but take into consideration that your bulb has to stay bout a foot away from the plant and tos in the height of the pot....you get the idea. either lst or scrog is about only good option

thanks. now i wanna make a bigger box. maybe i shouldve consulted first, but definitely thought i wouldve been ok based on my research haha. as i do plan on making this a new thing and definitely having a bigger grow going one day i will look into getting a bigger box. only prob is keeping it unnoticeable as space is tight around here but again thanks for the insight. how much heat would that 400w put off?

you asked for suggestions soooo; exhaust your cab/room high/intake low. you have a 4" fan? they still make those eh? 6" is as low as i'd go. if you're gonna pull air into the room from outside, you're gonna want to filter it. for veg, get your r/h up higher if you can, like at least 50%. as mentioned, you may want to consider a scrog.

i got the 4" cause the cfm was wayyy more than i thought i needed. it will be filtered out. was gonna put a filter at the opening of the inlet also. im also going to go back and get the fan controller as its got a decent hum to it and was over rated for the box i was gonna use. can only imagine what its gonna sound like when its all said and done. considering how big the 4" fan is, theres not gonna be much room for plant life in the box i was gonna make if i get the 6". the 6 would be much louder too. is it really needed if i were to build a 30"x36"x4' box? i really want results so i might even go up to 6'. plus isnt too much air movement not necessarily a good thing? I got 2 kids 3rd on the way. cant afford to line someones pockets anymore for my recreational habits so i need to have the right set up so i dont get everyone here in a jam. space is kinda limited and my place is not energy efficient at all. drafty as hell. so how would i get the humidity up? that is what your saying right silky?

^^^good thinking.^^^ ya, you just need a gentle breeze on the girls, not a frigging hurricane, like i see all the time, lol...

Exhaust fans don't really create a breeze, circulation fans do...get a 6" 440cfm inline and a quality fan controller...remember,you must account for pressure losses caused by...

1) Attaching ducting to the fan

2) Attaching a carbon filter to the fan which can cause a 25% pressure loss/reduction in airflow

3) Attaching an intake filter

4) any bends in the ducting.A 90° bend in ducting can cause up to a 25% pressure loss/airflow restriction.

this is the fan i already have...http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-A-GrowBright-4in-Inline-Fan-&-Carbon-Filter-Combo
its pretty powerful. i butted the can up to it to see if it would still have good air flow and from i can tell it was blowin out just as well as it was without it. it sucks i already have this stuff and im being suggestions to get different which is fine. i dont have a problem goin different, kinda, but i guess im more mad at myself for just buying instead of asking like i am now. im thinking about scrapping the idea of a grow box and using this closet i have. only thing is when its cold out its cold in there, same for hot weather. any ideas on how to stop that? if i can make the closet work, i know ill get the yields i want. the closet is 42"dx65"wx8'h. now if i were to do that would the 6" fan work or would i have to go bigger again? best part about all this is the wifeys cool with it. infact she suggested the closet today :)
i got crazy ideas going thru my head for every aspect of growing in the closet. theres no electric in it other than a ceiling bulb. could i screw in one of those outlet bulb converter things and run the appliances off of that? you know the vents in homes that are used for ac and heat, do they make them where it would be 1 vent but have 1 side for inlet the other to vent out. pulling from 1 direction and blowing out in the other? cause the ones in my place are louvered in different directions to "evenly" aerate the space. does that make sense or am i just nuts

what about the ballast? where should i mount that if i were to go the box route? same with the closet? should i have a fan blowing on it in the box and or closet?

If you have the cash a tent might help you out quite a bit. Even a cheap one would probably be beneficial.

Hey man, I'd add a 6-8" inline duct booster fan with around 350-500 CFM only because you'll need more now that your CFM will drop because of the carbon filter. A 6" is about $40, and you can use your 4'' to drive cool air into your tent.

Raise your temp about 5 degrees, and put a bucket of water to bring your humidity to around 55-60% your plants will love you for it.

i am trying to keep this simple, cost efficient, and get good results. i dont know if thats all possible. if i were to get a tent whats a good one? if i put a tent in the closet when its lights out time the plants are gonna be effected by he cold temps the closet drops too and having a grow tent in my apartment isnt too stealth either. ive looked all over the net for them. the prices are all over the place just as the reviews are. i imagined this as only needing... good light, fan powerful enough to draw enough fresh air in and eliminate odors that exhaust too type of thing. along with good soil and nutrients but nobody has said anything about them so im guessing i did good there! guess my perception as to what really goes into a successful, yielding grow was wrong? if i were to return things its gonna cost even more money. this is somewhat of a budget build but if im going to do it i want to do it right the first time cause it will pay off in the long run. is there a way for me to insulate my closet so when its cold outside its not cold in there without breaking the bank and damaging anything(mold between the walls or anything of the sort)? ill take care of venting it and getting fresh air to it. i feel thats less of a problem than the draftiness of it and the temp issue. i know if i do the closet route i definitely need to step up the fan size.

You need to have the exhaust hole at the top of the box.. Not at the opposite side of your intake hole. Remember heat rises

You need to go check out the micro/stealth/cab growing area (under indoor growing) get some ideas from other peoples grow. Tents are the expensive easy way out, if your handy and creative you can build your own growbox, have it super stealth, all set to scrog or lst in, and still spend less then buying a tent.

Im going to agree on the fan sizing 6" is minimum. 400w puts out a decent amount of heat, id doubt a 4" inline will be able to cool it fast enough. Maybe a 250w. Maybe.
