Getaway,
Just when I was about to give up hope a few of my old seeds finally cracked. I'd been trying a few at a time but as soon as they cracked they seemed to run out of energy. Well last night I checked and found that one actually put out a root so I put it in soil last night and this morning its up an inch, still has the seed shell on it but its up! Got it in a window with the sun beating down hoping its got enough energy left after 4 years to pop the shell off and start to photosynthesis.
That's the problem with old seeds, they only have so much stored energy and after time that energy depletes. They need enough stored energy to start a root, crack the seed shell, grow a tap root, and finally pop the shell off. If it survives long enough to do all that the green lip like starter leaves will start to photosynthesize and power the seedling into producing the first solar panel leaves.
I know from experience when they are as weak and fragile as this one is trying to help pop off the shell will more than likely kill it. The root it put out was pretty feeble, not like yours when they are bright white and strong and healthy.
This little seedling represents a back cross of BC Bud Depot's The Purps X Northern Lights (from 1990) which I named CRAZYHORSE, it is a female created by grow-room sabotage, somebody played with a timer and altered the light cycle causing budding plants to hermaphrodite.
I know this sound stupid to get excited about a tiny weakling seedling but I thought I had lost these genetics forever so if there's a chance to nurse it back and keep the strain alive I'm delighted this morning!
PS. I know that you know about seeds, I give out info sometimes for others who read our posts, for the newbies. I'm not trying to teach you, after all, I consider you to be one of my many teachers, Your the Swamp Master! lol
