newly added CFL's

today i just added in 3X300watt cfl's and recently added 3x150watt clfs these are on-top of my T5 (4ft 8bulb) set-up



kinda excited they are 5000 lumens each (300w) and i know you dont combine them to make 15,000 but the idea is blast them with as much as they can handle (yes you can give them to much) as close as possible

comments concerns ??'s always welcome

not that much at all actually and i have an issue with temps getting too low so they add a little extra but not a great amount nothing that isnt easily cure with the fans

When talking about CFLs you should list the actual wattage not the incandescent equivalent that is usually also listed... if you were using 900 watt between just 3 CFLs not only would it be way too hot, you'd be way better off with a 1000 watt cooltube for heat reasons and for easier setup. Like I'm pretty sure a 300 watt CFL is REALLY around 50 to 65 watts.

@headssstash thanks for your input but im staying away from the MH/HPS setups and running my T5 and cfls and yes they are 68 watts and i have no issues with it getting too hot at all i have issues with it getting to cold if you would have read my reply to noham's ? you would have known that......


why does everyone force MH/HPS on everyone when other things work just as well and are cheap and more cost efficient and last longer and way easier to deal with heat wise i live way the f*** up here and it gets -30 deg at night so the room cools easily at night and during the day for that matter
i could honestly have no fans in or out and it wouldnt get over 80 in my room with the space heater on and lights

Cfls are great for a low budget grow as they do not use much electricity but mh/hps are better when it comes to the outcome of your buds
cfls produce fluffy light nugs
werr hps/mh produce dense compressed buds
its really a thing of prefrrence
and ur cfls can be super close ao long as they are not touching plant.
but ur plants look good and healthy dude

i have/seen some amazingly dense buds from cfls i also use a T5 as well for both veg and flower and have had great luck with it

Two things: First: You should not touch the bulb part of the CFL with your bare hands, as the oil on your fingers will shorten it's lifespan. Wear gloves or hold a cloth when handling them and always screw them in holding the plastic base. CFL lifespans are very easily shortened by mishandling. Second: Dank, the things you said are only partly true. That is only the case with low-wattage CFLs, like 13w and 23w. That is because with CFLs the light intensity, penetration, and drop off are directly proportional to the size of the bulb. Small bulbs make for fluffy bud because they don't have the light penetration to allow for it, but with high watt CFLs you can easily overcome that and get very dense nugs. With size also increases heat though, and you can easily burn a plant with high watt CFLs, so they cannot be placed as close as the small ones which can be as close as several cm. An added benefit of CFLs is that they have appreciably higher UV-B output than HPS, and UV-B has an astounding impact on potency (This is the reason some people recommend using MH and/or 6500K CFLs as supplemental lighting in addition to the standard HPS during flower)

Never knew that before but it's great to know that now I am backed up with CFL money saving information - in a way

figured someone would say that i didnt think about that untill after, the other 2 i had gloves. but thanks
and the whole small fluffy airy buds with cfls is so not true alot has to do with strain, placement, how many, what out-put, nutes, medium, many other things can change the denseness of the bud but i know that MH/HPS do work very well but also have proof that T5's and cfls work great too

I'm not forcing anything on you. Do you come at people in real life with such a shit attitude or...? I was stating if you were running literally hundreds of watts worth of CFL's as you incorrectly were stating the wattage, it wouldn't be worth running so many watts and lights in cfls versus mh/hps. You can get great results with CFLs as seen on here and i've seen it personally. I don't hate on anyone's set up. If you know what your doing you can make alot of things work well. I read your reply about your temperature situation I was just stating that CFLs do get hot as f*** though as you stated that's isn't a problem of yours.

Sorry I must have miss typed something, I am fully in support of CFLs and I know they can work wonders. I was just saying the stereotype dank was talking about comes from people trying to use a couple 13w/23w cfls and not really understanding the light needs of the plant. With high watt CFLs (40+ actual watts) and good placement you can get top tier buds for sure.

it all comes down to your budget and preffrence
This whole thread became all about defending your cfls
do wat u do, leave the hate and bad attitudes towards peoples input at home
this blog is full of pros and cons
best way is to experience it yourself
no 2 gardens are alike

@headssstash- i wasnt being an ass nor was i trying to say that you were either but you can also see that i said 300w equiv. i wasnt saying true 300 watts nor do i look to start any arguments not that kinda person was just simply saying you stated that a HPS/MH would be better but thats only opinion and that it would be more cost effective and thats still only opinion.
didnt mean to start a CFL vs HPS/MH thread only put it up to show what i have done to improve what i have thats all

Rule of thumb is about a gram per watt

A gram per watt is a very optimistic goal. .30-.50 gram per watt is much more realistic unless you are an experienced grower
