I drilled drain holes in the bottoms...HOWEVER...I NEVER water enough to get runoff. I water a little every day but I'm very careful not to overwater...if these tubs get too wet they'd never dry out before root rot set it. I'm using FFOF soil and only feeding with topdressings and teas. I wouldn't recommend this to anybody having potential issues with their soil because these tubs can't be flushed! But it's lots of fun...I think you should convert to organic and give it a go18 gallon's!!!
What do you have for drainage? Do they have drain holes?
I got to go back and read again.................... My wife is going to kill me when I empty out all of the tubs holding the Halloween and Christmas decorations.

Im not terribly worried about dry spots...I try to water evenly and SLOWLY so it doesn't just find a channel to wash thru...I'm more concerned about soggy spots...but I give them 1/2 gallon or less per day...sounds like a lot but it really isn't when your talking about that much soil...this is a learning process for me, So far I'm pretty happy with the organic growing...
