Hi everyone, I am reading some info that appears to be contradictory; some say that using MH and switching to HPS provides a super yield, yet others say that using the HPS for both phases does just as well.

Anyone here experiment with both methods to see what worked out better?

I also heard that switching bulbs using the same ballast can be detrimental (to the unit or bulb.)

Please share your experiences if you have them.......thanks!

personally, I like only my mothers under a MH light. On numerous occasions I've started off seedlings/clones with a MH, and I feel they do a lot better under HPS.

i too like hps light.. a lot of peps will say that you will get more stretch using hps for veg, but i haven't really noticed this... i did just happen to get a t5 that i am now using for veg instead of the hps, and i and my plants love it.. i let them get a couple weeks old under the t5, then used both the t5 and the hps for the last week before flipping them to 12/12... now i am using both the t5 and the hps for flowering, and love it... i put the bloom bulbs in the t5, and it seems that the plants are responding very well to the mix......

metal halides by far..... alot more blue spectrum in the bulbs, best for veggin, crazy vigorous growth......, not saying hps isn't good, but my girls prefer mH for veg.

I'll say HPS then.

More lumens/watt = more efficient = better light.

HPS making plants stretch is an old wive's tale, in my humble opinion.

Used them both in every shape and size, and I'll take the HPS (but in reality, either will work fine for you).

The difference is the difference between nodes. HPS plants will generally be tall and skinny with more internodal distance and MH plants will be bushier with less distance between the nodes.

agreed. i have a little experiment going. started a grow and vegged under MH. once flowering started, added two new sprouts to veg under hps and both showed much more stretching under the hps, with less foliage growth than it's counterparts that were vegged under MH, not necessarily a bad thing though.
