I recently got a really unlucky batch of seeds from herbies, since two out of seven germinated. Originally I thought it was one out of seven seeds germinated. So I was 4 days after presoaking for a day, then placing into growing medium for sprouting. This seed didn't pop, the other one had popped already and so had the three bag seed I planted. I was really depressed at this point that I was only going to have one top quality strain, and three unknowns.
After I had gotten over it and decided "Well this could of been worse. I could of not gotten a single seed of the high qualities to sprout." Then I decided to see if I buried the white widow too deep, and I go into the soil looking for a sprout. After a short period of time digging around the 5 gallon pot, I find what looks like a dirt covered seed. I put it between my fingers carefully looking for white sprout. Seeing it without a sprout after four days made me lose hope of this seed sprouting. I ended up giving it the crush test, and it broke.
Now here's where things get funny, I was really stoned while doing this. It turns out when I originally planted it, I planted it way away from the center. Which turned out to be for the best.
Two days ago, I went to check on all my babies. When I got into the tent, and started looking around through the pots I noticed a small green stem popping up through the dirt. Which was strange since a friend of mine gave me a couple big bud seeds since he felt bad for me, he said they were pretty good and would give me high yields to make up for what I lost. Although they weren't feminized, one day prior I had soaked them and planted one in that same pot thinking no seed was in there. Upon realising the stem, I knew it was the white widow or northern lights. Like I said I was really stoned, and am not really sure which it is. This thing has some vigorous growth going on, and by the look of it is going to be a super female. However I'm not going to kill the big bud reg that is also sprouting, and would like to know when I can transfer the white widow safely. I was thinking at the end of this week, but am really unsure about transplanting. :

P.S. This is my first grow.

P.S.S Look really close and you can see the big bud beginning to sprout slightly to the north-east of the big sprout.

avoid transplanting seedlings overall they will go into shock and die i made that mistake my first grow and still regret to this day wait about two weeks after it has sprouted. and you shouldnt start with 5 gallon pots just get some plastic party cups and start from there

I didn't want to deal with transplanting my first time around. But it is going to need a transplant eventually. That 5 gallon pot is not going to hold two plants for 3 months.

just a side note as well, no matter how big your pot is, you should try and only do one plant per pot... what happens if one was a male and one is a female? you'd try and pull out the male and end up getting some or a lot of the chic's roots as well..

its just better to have them in their own pots...

I only want one plant in that pot, and it's completely accident that there is two. It just happens to be a pleasant accident, and now I need to fix it somehow. The reason it being pleasant is because I got another expensive seed out of my 50$ on seeds.

like the other person said, i'd give it like two weeks or maybe even three, and carefully dig down and try and get all of the roots that you can without damaging any of them... if you try it too early, you may end up killing it, and too late and it will be hard to get the roots seperated...

oh i can help you with transplanting hehe. i ALLWAYS end up with only 30 % of the roots intact hahaha still, they allways survive :)
btw, dont transplant when the soil is too dry. it tends to crumble

I took a risk and decided to move the reg to a different pot. I thought it was the only reasonable situation, to do it at a later time would be a risk to the almost guaranteed female. I'm hoping 1/2 teaspoon superthrive will help it survive. I know superthrive is not the miracle tonic it's made out to be, but it is proven to help with rooting.

I thought moving it would stress me out less, and make me happier... But now I just want the big bud seeding my friend gave me to live ;(

yah i would hate to worry everyday you said the other one is a bagseed i see why you would make the feminised your main priority in your situation i would too, you could get another bagseed anytime

Keep an eye on your female alot during the next week. You will see if it is thriving or not. Watch watering, I'm too stoned to try to find your soil---so don't over nute the female, temps, lights and PH are your only concerns for the forseeable future!
Good luck!
Peace

Status update, my female is growing like a true weed. It's growing twice as fast as all my other plants, it's only been sprouted for 3 days but it's already 4 inchs tall with decent sized true leafs. The seed I transplanted wilted when I transplanted it into the soil. The little reg grew a bit over night, a cm or two, and it also corrected its wilt. Seems like misting the plant with a spray bottle, and 1/2 teaspoon of superthrive mixed with 1 gallon of water did the trick. Thanks everyone who gave me advice!

EDIT: Not sure if everyone knows the big one was the female, not the one that was sprouting. I moved the smaller sprout, although it was much larger than when I originally showed the photo. I'm wondering where all my babies are going, they grow so fast.. Just two days ago I was worrying about sprouting, but it seems like with these seeds I got a 100% germ rate. Going to start a journal anyone interested in my grow.

Did you say seed and 5-gallon pot in the same context? It is likely that your seed failed the 'crush test' because your medium was too wet and it rotted. And you also say you pre-soaked the seeds, correct? That would've compounded the problem. Seeds really don't need to be soaked at all unless they're a couple years old, and even then a few hours will suffice to rehydrate the embryo.

If you ask me seeds are best started in a quality soil-less mix, and in containers much smaller than 5 gal. A plastic solo cup with a drilled hole or any suitable planting container between 4-6 inches tall is ideal.

And a 1/2 teaspoon of Superthrive? In what quantity of water? For most purposes one or a few drops of Superthrive is called for, if you feel the need to use it.

If you would of thoroughly read the description, I said "I thought". What I crushed was a small piece of pearlite. I did not crush a seed at all, the seed sprouted perfectly fine, and the only thing wrong was that I placed it towards the mid rim of the planting container when I planted it. So when I Went to see if their was a seed growing under the surface, I did not find anything because I placed it somewhere else. Therefore I put a seed in the pot that had been soaked to grow in the pot. With the soaking method I have a 100% germ rate currently. The problem was two plants in one container. Other than the fact that it is cumbersome to grow in a five gallon if the seed dies, there is nothing wrong with growing in a five gallon container from seed to finish that I know of. I used half teaspoon superthrive with 1 gallon of water, which is the appropriate amount for root health and stress management.

If you would thoroughly read it as being inquisitive...

Sorry man, alls I know is that I would have to be pretty faded to think that a piece of perlite was a seed... Perlite usually just turns to dust while a rotten seed would crush and expose its rotten innards. *sigh* I just wish I could get that high, I guess. As for starting in a 5-gal container being 'cumbersome', while that might be an understatement, it nonetheless baffles me why anyone (especially a first time grower) would desire to make growing more 'cumbersome' than it has to be. I can think of several reasons why starting in a smaller container (even a 1 gal) would be a much better idea, alas you just aren't interested.

I am pretty sure a quarter teaspoon per gallon is sufficient, a drop or two per cup of water is what I would use for weak cuttings although I prefer to use organic supplements like kelp for PGRs. With a vigorous strain/quality genetics Superthrive just isn't necessary at all, in my opinion.

Happy growing!

I've thought of a couple good reasons to not grow in 5 gallons to start myself, and I've thought of some benefits. I'll list mine, and you list yours. You're probably right, but it's too late now eh?

Pros:
No Transplanting = No periods of short growth due to stress.
No need to fertilize if you built your soil (I did not though)
Less time spent watering.

Cons:
Cumbersome to move the little plant.
You use up the soil quicker since you're not transplanting it to fresh soil for progression.

I'm sorry if I came off the wrong way I apologize.
