Yellowing lower leaves, browning and brown spots

Hi all,

Some of you might remember I was growing the Nirvana Bubblicious strain and logging it all ... I abruptly stopped making updates a few months ago. That was because, for reasons I really don't want to get into, the plants ceased to exist. That being said, I planted the DNA LA Woman freebie seed that I got and it's been growing steadily ever since.

Up until recently it was doing great, but the last week or so the entire bottom fan leaves have become yellow. After turning yellow, the edges began to brown, along with random brown spots through the lower leaves. The new growth on top looks great, green and vibrant and it smells even better. I can't post pictures, but I'm hoping someone could help diagnose the problem? I'm growing in Miracle Gro potting soil, and while I've heard that it's low in nitrogen I've already thought it could be a nitrogen deficiency and added some blood meal. (We'll see how that does.) It's not under or over watering, I'm a novice in that aspect and water every few days after the soil is completely dry. I don't gauge pH, and I know that can be a problem, but I'm on a tight budget. The plant is inbetween four 4' fluorescent bulbs, 40w each, daylight and cool white, along with two 4' fluorescent bulbs giving it light on top. It gets sufficient air, though on my last grow the same thing happened, so I'm thinking it may be some type of nutrient deficiency in the soil?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I apologize for the long description but it's necessary because I don't have any pictures.

I would say its mag deficiency because of the brown spots, give that bitch some nutes!

My guess it the nutrients. Ohh wait.. Youre not adding any... Im still saying nutrients.

When you use pre mixed soil. They have many nutrients in them already. I had this EXACT same issue. Brown edges, burn spots on fan leaves. Most of us shy away from Miracle Grow. They dont mix their ingredients evenly, you never really know what youre getting in that bag.

My problem was easy to pinpoint because I had 2 bags of Miracle Grow moisture control (with peralite), bought at 2 different stores. I used both bags when putting my plants in the soil. One group of plants had the problem... The other didnt.

I recently had the same problem again, because I switched nutrients, but gave them too much. Went to strait water for a week, and the problem stopped.

Also.. The pic on the right isnt a very good example. Mine had burnt edges, and the middle had burn holes.the rest of the leaf was decent.

Couldn't a low ph and too much nitrogen cause the same problem?

erm it would have burned earlier if it was bad soil not later wen plants actually want the nutes,,, how old is she i reckon she wants nutes dude if u aint giving any its the only prob i can see

I'd reckon she's probably a month or so old now. I grew her in a windowsill up until a certain point and that stunted her growth for awhile, which is why she's so small and compact for her age. To be honest I kind of like it that way, but these leaves are really bothering me =/ .. I don't want to lose her. I have her under 24 hour lighting now, and she has been under 24 hour lighting for the majority of her life, so I don't think this has anything to do with flowering. If there were too many nutrients in the MG soil, adding blood meal to boost nitrogen would have been the worst thing I could have done ... then again, the leaves were not the toxic green that normally presents itself in a nitrogen deficiency, so I don't know. I've included pictures that I was able to take (below). As you can see, the lower foliage is completely fucked. I tried to get a few pictures of the healthy upper foilage to show just how much the plant contrasts from top to bottom ... I'd REALLY appreciate any help in reviving her. She is a great looking plant and I'd like to keep her.

in my opinion id say she wants half dose of grow nutes, the reason i say this 1 the age, 2 the fact u havent given any nutes yet only wats in soil which after 4 weeks will want a top up, 3 the overall yellowing of leaf as opposed to burnt spots, 4 also u can see the yellow spreading up 2 nxt set of leaves again in a uniformed fashion not sparadically as u wud see wit burn. if u havent added nutes it will not be burn not to show up after 4 weeks like it has.. its your call m8 but im sure u can relate to wat im saying look in the plant problem sticky and u will see the results of the deficiencys on foliage, then u can match your leaves to that gd luck an merry xmas

Yeah... I guess I'll give it a few days to see if the yellow spreads some more and then add fert if the yellowing continues. Thanks.

have you tested your PH?

LA Woman is a mostly indica strain, meaning it will require more nutrients than sativa dom. strain. I'd use a good organic fert to get her going. I've had good results in the past using a 2-3-1 fish emulsion from seed to smoke.

get some fox farms liquid nutes give her a dose at 1/4 strength and give her a good watering and dont let the soil dry completely between waterings only top 2 inches at most there is some growers who say that is even too dry if you have good drainage your soil shouldnt retain enough water to cause root rot so dont be afraid to water get a moisture meter and then you can check your moisture at the root level which can be alot different then the very bottom or the top of your pot good luck buddy

hey man, you'll definately want to check and adjust your ph. Irregardless to how much and the ratio to which your nute's are mixed, your plant needs to go through a range of Ph's (Between 6.2-6.8 in soil) in order to pull the different elements out of the soil. miracle grow can work, but isnt the best thing you can be doing for your ladies. I dont want to criticize, but when you grow indoors under low light, In my previous experience, I've realized you can mulitply your crop drastically by investing in organic amendments for your soil. The Sunleaves brand of guanos can take care of all your worries when you make fertilizer tea for your plants. you may want to incorporate a small amount of Cal/mag or a general Organic Micro-nutrient formula
