Hopefully someone here knows about window a/c units and how they work. I want to go out of town for a couple days. My window a/c unit has a drain plug that I have been taking out to drain the unit every morning and then maybe once or twice after that around mid day and at night. If I am out of town I won't be able to do this, so I am wondering what I should do. Should I leave the plug out and just let the water drip? Or should I leave it in? Or am I screwed and not able to go out of town?

I'm not an overly experienced grower, nor do I have a lot of posts, but I have been around and used quite a few window A/C units in houses, apartments, and a few grow rooms. All dripped freely all the time if they were dripping outdoors. I've never even seen one with a tube to redirect the dripping, but could see use cases for that.
If there is nothing under it you care about, and it's dripping outdoors, I would let it drip always, and not bother with your current water disposal routine at all.
As a second thought, if it is dripping into another indoor space, I would get a bucket or rubbermaid container now and leave the plug out to see how much it drips in a typical 24 hour period before you need to go away anywhere. If your watering and heat levels stay consistant from now until the time you want to go, you should be able to just multiply the amount you capture by the days you'll be gone and add some room for error. This should be your required container size.

its hanging out the window so no need for a bucket. But, the owners manual says something about not taking the drain plug out because it needs to be in for the unit to work right....
I assume they just mean with the plug in, the water is able to reach a high enough level for the fan blades to reach it and swat it onto the condenser or whatever to cool it. I'm just worried about it overheating or frying something inside without the water in it to cool it but I know absolutely nothing about any of this.
Ah, it is like the one my father just purchased. Those units you just leave the water to build up amd overflow on their own. No damage will occur, and no need to drain periodically. The plug is to drain it for seasonal storage or repair, etc.
If it were mine, and I had nothing underneath it I was concerned about, I'd leave the plug in as designed, and let it overflow as needed.
