Will one gallon pots cut it when growing purely for seeds?

I haven’t grown for about a year. I’ve been away from home lot and generally too distracted to really devote enough time to a full harvest. I’m thinking about starting it up again, but I’m stuck on the planning stage a bit. Hopefully you guys can give me some insight.

TLDR version : I’ve only got 4 random bag seeds and want to breed the plants. My grow box is small and has just enough room for two 3-gallon pots. Finding 4 pots that’ll fit in the 1-2 gallon range isn’t likely. Keeping a very short veg cycle, do you think I could get away with 1 gallon pots to get seeds?

Long version:
Growing for me is purely a hobby and side project. I used bag seed last time and that’s the route I’ll be taking this time too. Only problem is last time I had 10 to start with, this time I’ve only got 4 beans. Since I’ve only got a handful of seeds and I still don’t trust myself with cloning yet, I really want to pollinate this batch to have a cache of seeds for the future. Yield isn’t a concern at all for me this time.

My box is two 30”x18”x18” boxes stacked on top of each other. The measurements are slightly misleading since the base of the box tapers to about 15 inches. There’s approximate 200W of CFLs in there with a 75 watt mogul socket CFL right in the middle. It’s worked well for me in the past flowering two plants at a time. Basically I’d germinate 4-5 seeds and after they got about 8-10 inches I’d pop them in the box to sex them until I got 2 females. If I had any excess plants I’d put them off to the side with minimal light just to keep them alive. After the first two in the box are harvested the excess plants are trimmed up and popped in.

Since there’s only 4 seeds this time around I want to get them all in the box at the same time and hope to get at least 1 male and female (I’ve had bad luck in the past with getting all males and all females a few times). Since I WANT them to pollinate, I’m assuming if I keep the conditions the same for all the plants they should become sexually mature about the same time with the males possibly getting there first. Since I have limited space I’m going to have to downsize my pots. I’ve been looking around locally and with the measurements I need, 1-gallon pots are probably the best I can do.

So with a short veg cycle, do you think I could pull this off? I *could* top each plant and use the cutting to find the gender and put 1 male and female in the grow box in 3-gallon pots… but I really don’t trust my cloning skills especially since these are my last seeds.

Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to be thorough :-P. Thanks guys!
