i am currently designing a new growbox because the one im using now is tiny... i picked up a dresser that im going to make it out of and its 2' wide 17"deep and 2'high. i ordered fans from ebay and recieved them today but they are only 80mm so my question is will 1 80mm fan for intake and 1 80mm fan for exhaust be enough? if not what do i need and where can i get them cheap from a store. fuck ebay

For ventilation alone, I would say it will be enough.

However, if you are using anything other than CFL lights and you need to cool them also, then I am pretty sure your fans are not going to keep up.

Dont under estimate ventilation.. The air in ur box needs to be exchanged at least once every 5 min.. I recommend using atleast 4 of those fans if u have to use them. if not, goto walmart and buy a small desk fan or something similar..

You need to address what type of lights you will using and the CFM rating of the 80mm fans before people can give you accurate advice.

It will probably work just fine.. If its for florescent lights I recommend 2 120mm fans and have them both blowing at the plants from a few feet away. Basically you want just enough air movement for the leaves to always move or vibrate just a little bit (taken from the sensi seeds crew). The air movement helps the plants breath and speeds growth (not really needed as much for cooling). Try Radio shack or best buy for cheapo PC fans, or rip some out of a junker pc. Then all you need is an old power supply to hotwire so it supplies juice to keep the fans on. There are plenty of videos on youtube for this. Make some fan guards with a piece of screen or something to protect from accidents.
If its an HPS or MH go with a 12" desk fan on low. You have a very small space for these lights and may run into heat problems. Have the fan blowing under the plants so that the air flow isn't hitting the plants directly. You will also need to use a fan to cool the light, and ducts to carry the heat away (or even liquid cooling in that space).
There is my 5c Good luck!

why do you think the size of the fan more relevant than the amount of air that is being transferred and don't you think a 12' fan is going to take up too much space in his already small grow area?

Just a few perplexing thoughts I had.....:?

I've used two 80mm PC fans in a 6 cubic feet box running about 200 watts of CFL without problems. However, that was without any kind of filtration. When it came time to flower I needed to use a filter and added about another 150 watts of CFL lighting (350 total) so I experimented with three PC slot fans (squirrel cage style) with great results. They move about 1/2 as much air as the typical inline type but they pull (not push) through a filter much better.

Just buy a bathroom exhaust fan from your local hardware store and wire it to a GFCI circuit. You can pick one up for about $20, they are usually rated 50-70 CFM and they're pretty quiet. No DC powered PC fan will compare to it either especially under resistance.

I have two cabs that use PC fans and I wish I had done things right the first time and just bought an AC powered squirrel fan or bathroom fan.
