I don't know since black people didn't have the freedom to vote let alone free speech it's justifiable. It was also just during the Civil War. Maybe slavery would have fazed out on it's own peacefully but not for a long time probably. Might not have been the best President but he ended slavery something that should have never happened in a free country.

If people are to be emancipated, WHAT is it they are to be emancipated from is the question. I say it is arbitrary rules of others over their bodies and their justly acquired property. What do you say?
Civil rights is a government construct which attempts to fix problems caused by government in the first place. It would have been easier if government had never instituted laws which stopped people who wished to associate from doing so.
