where are the trychs?

just got back from seeing a buddy's grow and the results of his last batch cured.
it was super disappointing. he is growing autos in soil with some time released ferts system and other organic/natural solutions.
the cured stuff smelled ok, but there was no frost. buds were super dense, almost like commercial nug

is this low potency stuff normal? i only ever grew photos, and even the crappy ones were laden with fair coats of frost. my profile pic is an example of good frost. the worst bud i even grew was so awesome and this is not like that at all.

he has some photos going now too, and even those at like 5 or 6 weeks flower don't have a lot of visible trichs.

is it his setup/grow, or are a lot of folks not getting super frosty stuff...on autos or otherwise?

what is a typical cause of low potency, low frost bud, or is it likely just genetics? he has about 400w over a 2x4, decent temps. no odd tress. like i said, super dense, weighty buds.

Genetics would be my guess.. and autos tend to be mid gade potency in my opinion..
Although lack of trichs doesnt mean low potency.. i grew iranian short season years ago and it had very little crystal production but was stupidly potent.

i know what you mean, but for two totally different strains to not show frost....and the new photos being less frosty than my banana sapphire at 3weeks..that is weird. i want to blame genetics, but also the grow setup.

Whats the light set up? All you put was 400w.. 400w. What? If its a hid light like mh or hps. He could alternate the bulbs tword the end of his run to increase trich's or use uv-a and uv-b lights to increase trichs.

Its most likley the genetics, as you said the buds themself were big an solid indicating the conditions were good. You could try putting a cutting from one of the plants from your set up that you know performs good in his set up to see what happens. If that comes out good well then you will know its the genetics. There are way to many breeders out there that just grab anything not knowing how its been reproduced, how far from the true parents it is, make seeds an then put them out. You have no indication if its a f2, f3, f10 even or a s2, s5, s6 ect but its just labled as the original strain. Then you get people wondering why their northern lights or super silver haze or what ever else isnt as good as they heard it was.

the autos were done with a 200w viparspectra qb, not the newest one with the meanwell, the other. the buds are so dense...it's not like any of my grows.

Plant growth regulators such as paclobutrazol and chlormaquat chloride will limit trichome production as it blocks gibberellin. If he has rock solid nugs with no trichs he could be using something that contains a pgr, or it could just be genetics..

Triazole fungicides/insecticides also act very similar to pgr...I had a mate unknowingly using a triazole fungicide/pest application to fight off a fungal disease and pest issue and it acted just like paclobutrazol. Ultra dense nugs, dark leaves, no trichs, odd smell...

He was at a loss trying to figure out what was up until I saw "trifend" beside his grow which he used for IPM.

Let's just say I won't be consuming any of his weed just in case.
