is there any 'rule of thumb' when it comes to harvesting? besides the flowers turning brownish is there anything else that you can notice when its almost complete?

The best indication of maturity and harvest time is supposed to be the tricomes. If they are clear it's not ready. If most are cloudy and a few amber then harvesting will give more of an "up" high. If more are amber than cloudy you will have a stoney or couch lock effect.

and my friend told me that if you leave your plants in the dark for 2 days then when you harvest it do a slow dry/cure in the fridge, taking the jar out and whipeing the inside out every day

Def. leave them in the dark for 2 days, the plant will think it is dying and force out all of the resin, to make it more potent, curing is totally up to you.
