What's the problem?

I am a newbie trying to grow a successful plant outdoors. I live in Hawaii and have seeds of all kinds from bags I purchased with a seed or two in the bud or from friends who grow.

Okay, well this is a two part question. I read across this board that many people have problems either sprouting their seed or keeping it alive once sprouted. I've probably sprouted and kept alive 5-6 seeds and all I do is get some planting soil from any garden shop and poke the seed in the soil. Spouts and stays alive without any problem.

Do I just have good seeds? Good weather? Or just lucky?

Secondly, when I mentioned i'm trying to grow a successful plant, successful is being a plant that is taller than 12" and not lanky. Out of the 3 or 4 plants i've grown, they all stay about 12" tall at most and yields like an 1/8 at most. I am growing these in 1/2 gallon pots. I use no nutrients or grow enhancers. Just potting mix. I read that the plants start flowering at 12/12...in Hawaii we have 14 light/10 dark year around. Also, my most recent plant started flowering and the leaves are only 3 fingered if that makes any difference.

Any suggestions?
