When it comes to lighting, you get what you pay for. I work for a very respected grow supply company. I only use hortilux or sunmaster and only recommend hortilux and sunmaster. It all comes to quality, spectrum and energy. That is what most of your lighting purchases should be based on.

I went on ebay and ended up with a 400w ballast kit for like $50. I put it in a stainless steel box and bought a yieldmaster hood. Got a 400hps bulb from the local electric and there ya go. light, ballast and reflector around $200. I say, spend $130 on a badass light hood, and keep your eyes open for a gr8 deal on a ballast new. I have since replaced my 400w ballast with a 1000w PL lighting switchable. Think it cost me about $175 used under warranty. However, I still use the hood (for all my ballasts). You get what you pay for, so buy good shit if its gna last.

My 1000 watt is switchable, but believe it or not, I gave up on my MH bulb after it didnt seem to make any difference cept for not as bright. Not so sure about digital ballasts. Lumatek has a nice one thats supposed to handle 400w 600w and 1000w, switchable. 5yr warranty, but im still skeptical. heard a lot of reliability issues with digital. Maybe I'll get one since Ive backups now. Anyhow, my 400W hps ballast is still my go to ballast. Its nice to have an old tried and true ballast in the darkness waiting for an emergency.

Perhaps you may get a 600w (most efficient) or 1000w for Dense buds? If you got the $$, go switchable. If not, go quality hps for sure....
