I have a HANNA pHep electronic tester. Gives temp and is also waterproof. Paid $50 for it used. You can find used ones at hydro stores or on craigslist/ebay from time to time. I think new it is @ $120 but these are very impt. There are less expensive models that you can get at HomeDepot or Lowes etc... Walmart that are @ $8 and work sometimes and sometimes don't. I WOULDN'T trust them if I were you. Spend some cash and get something that will last a long time and is accurate. There are also test strips you can buy at the Pet Stores but will eventually get very expensive to buy these since you can use one strip only one time.

pH up and pH down can also be found at the Pet Stores and is also a necessity. I think they are @ $10 bottle for each.

You dont need any fancy stuff. Draw up some water out of the faucet and let it sit for a while. I like at least over night for a gallon..maybe two days for 5 gallons. Keep it exposed to the air by as wide expanse as possible. That will get rid of the chlorine. Insert a fish bubbler and let it go to town for a while. Dump in two capfuls of Lemon Juice (Real Lemon cheap stuff etc). You will be just right. Kindly dont axe me how I learned all this stuff:) Now if you dipping out of a cesspool...water well etc. might be best to test it once on the front end so you got something to work with. If you a real Algore type and are watering with rain water or Pierrier water I take all this back of course. If you dont water when your drunk or stoned you shouldnt need any down. Works that way for me anyway. I quit testing years ago. Send me a PM if your confused.

A good PH tester and TDS testers are worth there weight in gold. I do not agree that you do not need one even if you have pristine water and let it sit out and bubble for a week. The chemicals and fertilizers you add can really change what are ideal watering conditions. Mixing certain fertilizers can also throw off your PH considerably. If you were looking to buy a PH tester, I would recommend looking for ones with at least two calibration points. This is more important than brand name. All the single point calibration digital PH testers are less accurate and just are not that good.

PH - Hanna - hand meter - around $60 - its alright goes out on me some times, then calibrate it back to working order, one time couldnt get it to work took it back they replaced it with a new one sent the broken one back to the company.(one month into grow)

PPM/EC - Wizard Dipstick - Hand Meter - around $60 - ehh does the job (three months into the grow)

Wish i had the money when i got them to get a nice one that does both but there around 200 and up. Remeber to think of your setup do you need a meter that can be used different water res tanks, or do you only have one water res tank.
