What are the effects of TIM applied? MX2? Gelid? etc...COB's

Hey there,
I already have MX-2 Thermal Paste and was wondering if anyone has tried more than a few TIM's and the results of the constant heat as well as how they cooled. Right now I am looking at buying some GELID thermal compound because it rates at 8.5 W/(m*K) for thermal conductivity. Has anyone tried this type with the COBS?

MX 2 5.6 W/(m*K)
GELID 8.5 W/(m*K)

How much difference would it make to use the GELID over the MX-2?

Thanks!

Toms hardware is showing a 1.5C difference in their medium mount pressure GPU test. Whether that's enough of a difference to bother with is a matter of opinion but since you already have the MX-2 I say use it.

About those thermal pads I see there are several different places to get them and even sheets of it.

With those ideal 2303CR cob holders what thickness would be correct for the right amount of compression to make them work best?

(0.125mm, 0.25mm, and 0.50mm

0.127 mm (0.005”) ± 10%
0.25 mm (0.010”) ± 5%
0.51 mm (0.020”) ± 5%

Use MX-2. Supra recommended it to me and i have been using it for all testing and personal lamps. I use Artic silver 5 for the lamps that I sell.
I think the differences are small. Whatever is easier to apply in a thin layer. Like rahz said MX-2 since you already have it.

For thermal pads try the Graftech that Abiqua mentioned or goto PacificLightConcepts and get the 3590 Sur-Seal Thermal Pad

Yeah I have 30g of MX-2 I bought last year plenty to do everything I want.

You are going to have -two- layers of paste on this build, right? So double any differences.

Yup right now using steel wool to polish all surfaces on the plate down flat and will get some ultra fine grade to make them as close to mirror finish as possible at the end. In theroy the buffer will be the plate and the heat sink above each cob will remove heat. Testing will show me the amps I can use and what the equalized heat will be at. I will test at 50% of driver (875mA) first

How will you measure temps?

I am ordering a thermal temperature gun.

I wont get the it all together until the end of this month about the time I get my Card.

Then I will set up test runs of start temps and measure every 10-15 mins the first hour to see how the temps are doing once I get an idea of how long it takes until they get stable then I will run more tests slightly increasing the mA's. The Driver goes 875-1750mA and once I find temps to about 45-50 C that's where I will leave the Driver set.
