What Am I Doing Wrong?

Hey guys, i wonder if anyone could point out why i keep going wrong. I've just had to cut my northern lights down because it was dying and i discovered the top cola had all rotted :(
In my time growing I've tired about 7 plants and only had one that i actually smoked. This plant i was giving it nutes every other watering but all the leafs kept dying. If i was to try one last time would i benefit from an EC meter ? will that help with keeping the nutes at the right amount ?
All my other plants in the past f-ed up because i over nuted them.
I just don't know weather to give up growing or not.

Btw i use CFL's to grow

Well is it going to be worth me trying again ? and would an EC meter help me with giving the right nutes to the plant, i know you can only really use ec meter for testing the nutes in the water, but could it be used to test the nutes in the soil ?

Using the cfl's, cut back on your nutes.

You didnt say what kind or how much you are using.. but a good way to go about the whole thing is feed only every 3 waterings and even then, a reduced amount.
Make sure your water is within the acceptable PH scale.
Make sure you arent watering until the soil (did you say youre growing in soil?) is DRY and the fan leaves sag a bit. Its important for root health to not keep them saturated at all times. Dont be afraid to aerate too..poke the shit out of the soil about a day after watering.

so wait, grammarpolice... youre saying its ok to take the roots out of the soil to let em air out?? i thought it will kill the roots?

I think i ended up watering 3 times a week about a litre of water each time - i did shove my finger into the soil to feel for moisture and when i did give it nutes i gave it 4ml per litre (as instructed on the bottle) but sometimes i would give it 4ml bio-bizz bloom and 4ml - bio bizz top max at the same time (mixed it all in the same water) could that of been over kill ? my Ph was always about 7 and before i would water it i would let the water sit for 24 hours (because i read that you should do that to burn the chlorine off) And yes i was using soil i used miracle grow as i've tried over soils and the plants didn't even make it a fortnight before dying :( are there any meters that could measure the amount of nutes in the soil ?
Also would i be better off growing a sativa or indica - do any of them have benefits over each other ?
sorry for the long post but i'm gonna try one last time and if that fails i'm giving up for good, so i wanna try and get it right.

It will, and kill your plants!!! He is saying that he should poke holes in the soil to allow more air to the roots. Bud, imho i think you should lay off the nutes completely unless your plant starts to tell you it needs them. See if you have any luck doing that before you give up. If you need help with the signs, i'm sure there are many people on this forum willing to give you pointers if you have some pictures up. Good luck!

Well all sounds well except for the nutes, 8ml per liter sounds like ALOT. Using miricle grow as your soil should allow you a large window of time where you shouldnt have to give them nutes. Im not entirely experienced as im on my first grow, but im using MG as well, and im 3 and a half weeks into my grow and niether of my plants are telling me they need nutes. As far as indica vs sativa, im pretty sure the only big differences in growing are size and flower time, with sativa being the higher of both. I could be wrong :)
Sorry for the double post, but i do think you should give it another go, but try it this time without nutes for at least a few weeks, and see if you have any luck that way.

Yeah i will try that and as soon as it starts showing problems i'll get some pictures up on here. I'm just looking now for another strain to try don't think i really wanna do nl again as it takes so long to even flower. I was looking at some seeds by dutch passion. Does anyone know if dutch passion have a good reputation ?

Thanks that some good advice since your using MG as well when you do add nutes how much do you use roughly ? If i do another one i'm not gonna use the top max at all i'll just stick with bloom and grow.

This is my first grow, so i've never used nutes yet, but my moto is If its not broke, don't fix it lol. I'm waiting for my babies to tell me they need it, but in the meantime i've got an excellent page for you, that i thought was extremely helpful in knowing how to read your plant. (i don't know what forum rules are on posting hyperlinks, so if im out of lines plz tell me ) http://growweedeasy.com/marijuana-symptoms
Also i lied, lol, i am using perlite, i just thought of it. But its already mixed in with my miracle grow. I also forgot about another supplement in my soil. Its MG shake n feed. Its little green pellet looking things that you just mix in with the soil. It was pre mixed so thats why i forgot about it. 10%N 10%phosphate 10%potash 20%sulfer. So far thought, i havent had to add any feed to my water or anything of that nature. I don't think its that expensive, so if you don't want to wory about mesuring out your feed, or nute burn, give that stuff a try, you should be able to find it locally. The combination of my ssoil, perlight, and this MG feed stuf, my plants seem to be doing well. If you want, go take a look at my plants, i've got pics from day 1 to now :)

thanks for the link, i found another site that has pictures so i was going by that but it's probably best to post pictures and ask people. Next time i'm gonna mix my MG with some perlite for better drainage and might drill some more holes in the bottom of the pot for better drainage. Gonna try a Kush plant this time. I managed to get a bit off my NL (the bits that didn't have bud rot) so just waiting for them to dry, but there not very budding it's mainly leafs covered in crystals but ah well it all helps lol

If the bud rotted that could be a sign of too high humidity the soil was to wet with not enough ventilation which can stagnate and cause bud to rot
