Weed too dry to cure

So at day 5 of drying at 55% RH and 22-25C I put the nugs in a jar and in one or two hours it shoots up to 71%. I thought it's too wet, I put it back on the drying rack. I had to go out of town for a few days, I come back on day 9 and they are bone dry. Stems snap.

I put them in an air tight container and check after a few hours and it's at 35RH, which is just the normal humidity of air here right now. I sleep and wake up this morning after 12 hours and check again. It's at 35% RH, didn't budge, the humidity in there matches the humidity of air outside.

My dumbass knowledge of cannabis growing tells me I have fucked up, this weed is not curable anymore and that next time I should jar at day 7 which is in the middle. What do you think of this and what should I do next time?

I think that drying and curing Cannabis is one of the most difficult things to master and that you probably won’t accomplish that until you dedicate a space to it.

Fair enough. I think nearly all of my problems come from not having a proper space.

stick a piece of celery in it and watch the RH go up

The cigar guys, if I'm not mistaken, will say that you can rehydrate cigars and after a month or so of that they will be back to their previous state. But I think where you will have a problem isn't getting the RH back up it's getting the weed to off gas or degrade stuff like chlorophyl. It's my understanding, based on my limited personal experience and word of mouth, that ones that process stops in cannabis it doesn't start up again.

Not sure that helps but let us know if you happen on a successful strategy.

You have reached the "point of no return".. once you can't raise it back up.. esp at 35%, you're just stuck there. You've dried it out so much, that there is not enough moisture at the center of the bud to draw it out. Game over. As BK said, if your harvest is ripe, and has dried to the 58-63% range, and is stable,.. you can store it for a looong time. Better to overshoot than undershoot your dry level. You can always fix over... but not under.

Also... this is a great tool to know when your buds are dry enough. It's just a digital wood moisture meter I got off of AMZ. Now, keep in mind that it does not concur with my lab results, but I've learned from a few labs where the water activity needs to be. If i get a reading of 9ish, by labs will come back at 14 ish water activity. So, I have moved my target to 7 on the meter... seems to be perfect.

Dry it until it's ready to smoke and start smoking. You don't have to cure and I think people make too much of a big deal out of it. Terpenes degrade over time anyway so so you're actually losing some of those the longer you play with your weed. Many of us prefer fresh weed and don't bother burping daily or checking RH. I prefer fresh dried weed over months old cured weed.

I'm sure some will take issue with my nonchalant attitude about not curing and I don't give a damn. My weed smokes and tastes great without all the burping and hygrometer ritual.

You rebel , you

I just broke out some Sour Diesel that I grew 2 cycles ago and the terpenes have changed drastically, it tastes more mothbally now, instead of Sour. I think terpenes offgass at different rates, which is why terpenes change in storage. Honestly, it tastes terrible now compared to that full tasty Sour D flavor profile it had immediately after drying. That is when your weed is at it's peak, it's all downhill from there. Funny thing is, it's more potent than any strain I grew last time, love that Sour D!

In my limited experience- I believe curing helps with flavor and smooths out harshness.
It may loose some “strength” but it is more enjoyable to consume.
I am looking for a fine wine rather than grain alcohol.
That said I have noticed, as have others, that my nugs are “stronger and better” than the dispensary products- which I thought would be impossible as I have purchased strains that had 39% thc.
Curing is practically inevitable- as the amount I am processing will take quite a while to consume.

You purchased strains that claimed to have 39% THC. Like many claims related to cannabis I wouldn't believe the 39% claim. It's like cannabis specific nutrients claiming a 25% increase in yield if you use their products. Just more false claims. I suppose the 39% claim is possible but they would have had to fortify the weed with something the same way they fortify wine to make it stronger.

My state has strict testing- however it is most likely the submitted sample was the absolute best nugs on one of the thousands of plants.
So I don’t doubt it tested that high- but I know that every other nug is probably not that high.
It has been a reliable way to compare strains but honestly I go by the terpenes- which I find more reliable for the effects I am looking for.
Also I know someone who works in the test lab. He said it is straight up.

Yeah we have a service with a strain claiming to be 38%, I smoked it and did not feel like it was even half that strength. In my experience, the number is less important than people think. The resin content and terpenes matter as much, it is an overall combined effect and not just the amount of thc a strain has that leads to the perceived strength of the high. Edit: it is a cross of Gelato and something else if that matters at all..

The percentage can likely be altered by adding a sprinkle of kief on a bud- however I doubt the producers would chance their license doing this. There are only 4 producers in the state so competition is definitely very limited and there is probably not that much incentive to submit a false sample. They are already selling 100% of their harvest at a set maximum price.
