am i better to be watering my plants and letting it run out the ends of the pot or water it in a saucer/ tray and let it use all its water ?

You should always allow for about 5-10% run off out of the pot. This helps remove plant wastes and stale oxgygen-less water out of the soil. Just make sure you throw away this run off water and don't let the plant soak it back up.

You need to shoot for a fine balance between a little run off and too much run off which will start leaching nutrients from the soil.
 
200ml every 48 hours for indoor plants over 1ft.

I find it curious as to how you can be so precise about how much and when to water indoor plants over 1 foot tall.

Makes me wonder why my plants over 1 foot get through about 1Litre of water each about every 3-4 days.

Watering plants a little but often is probably the worst thing you can do to them.
