Well i recently decided to dust off the old grow gear ( im an outdoor guy )and asked a good friend for a couple cuts of the local ticket, and he was nice enough to give me 2 nice cuts in solo cups, i inspected for mites and other pest and didnt find any , i noticed the soil was compact and damp so i didnt water , couple days later i notice the fudgin fungus gnat flies , i decided to free up a few roots and transplant in dry soil in hopes of drying the soil from the rootball ( slightly root bound),, Am i doing this right by trying to dry it to the point of wilt before next watering to rid the gnats?

Thrip also live in substrate, and IMO, are often miss diagnosed as gnats, if you've never encountered them.

Easy way to tell is gnats normally will stay in flight longer, where adult thrip are larger, and won't stay a flight long. Thrip larvae are easy to spot signs on the leaves, but if its a clone from a friend, they might not be easy to see.
