ViparSpectra KS5000 Initial Thoughts

I saw that the KS500 was down to roughly $360 with sales and a code. I thought it was a good time to upgrade from the 480w 3000k no name quantum board HLG clone fixture that I have been using for the past few years. The 480w had run flawlessly but suffered from the typical hot spot in the center and poor coverage around the edges. The reviews I found for the KS all pointed to fixing those issues with a negligible increase in power consumption, so I pulled the trigger.

After being in use for a few weeks, I am very happy with the light. Using a phone app for relative numbers, Coverage is leaps and bounds better than my old light. The fixture runs cooler, the tent is generally 4 or so degrees cooler than it was with the old fixture with both running at max. This allowed me to slow my fan down a bit. I moved new plants into flower a week and a half ago and they are praying hard. They appear much happier under this light, than I was accustomed to. I don't know if its the added blue vs the old straight 3k leds, the even coverage or a combination of the two but I am stoked to see such a good reaction to the change.

The fixture itself is very sturdy, the driver is a monster size wise but seems to stay cooler than the 480w meanwell that powered the old light. The only slight gripe I have encountered is that I wish the dimmer was full range, it is locked in at 25% increments. I would prefer to have more control, but it is something I can live with by adjusting hanging height if it ever becomes a real issue.

Proof will be in the results at the end of this run of course, but right now I am rather optimistic. If your a hobby grower in a 4 x 4, I think the KS5000 is definitely worth some consideration.

I've had mine for a year and I agree it's a great light in its category. The price you paid is a steal. I keep the driver outside the tent, the bars themselves hardly heat up at all. It's now my main veg light, but it certainly flowered without a hitch as well.
