I have the dimmable version, i had it shining light on half of a big plant. That half was a lot slower in the flowering cycle. It is good to veg with, just to have light to grow seedlings.
It could handle 1 small plant, touching it directly. Not a 4x4

I have a Viparspectra VA-1200 "1200w" (264 at wall) in a 4x4.

That light worked fine from seedling until repotting in 5 gal fabric - there just isn't enough spread to the light, so I'm supplementing with three additional "300w" burples.

My upgrade path will probably involve a more powerful DIY setup - re: placement options, coverage per watt, and just more ppfd overall.

IMHO - before you buy, read grow journals and take note of how others with similar setups fare.
I follow almost every 4x4 grow I can find to see if I can find better methods or equipment; even failures - why not learn from others?

Here's mine if you're interested:

You can see from my seedling pics that the 1200 will not be enough to finish all 7 plants; hence the additional 300w lights.
