Yes, you can. Keep the light at least 3 feet from them at first and gradually lower the light where you want it over the course of 3-4 days.

I learned the hard way. The hps are great for growing, but the cause the plants to stretch if you dont put the light as close as you can w/o getting heat burn. I dont think you can have TOO MUCH LIGHT if the temps stay good. Im going to try and get my 1000hps in the action once the look 4" tall, or healthy. Rather trim the tops cuz of stretching, than no growth from the puny floros im veggin with :)

I think a 1000 watt hps is od and a 250 is to little for 84 kids. I stand by an 8 bulb 6500K T5, hands down the best way to Veg. Low power consumption and you can slam the thing right down on top of them with just a fan going. Even if you have the light 3 feet off the top of the kids that will still create stretching, on top of which 1000 watts of power in veg is just outlandish.

First off u can never have too much light during veg. I've grown for 15 yrs indoors. I've grown with flouros and HID and the lumens tell it all. I use 430 watt Agrow HPS bulbs with the added element with blue spectrum rated at 55,000 lumens. I keep the lights 18" from the tops of plants and I have nodes fightin with each other trying to get out and I mean stacked. I personally like to wait for 3 tips of the first bladed leaves to show before I increase the light. 80 plants does seem like a lot. If you get 50 fems out of the 80 a single 1000 watt light won't do.
