Urgent! My hydro plants just went limp!

I just changed the tank, replacing it with six gallons of filtered water, 2/3 strength veg nutes, and a splash of H2O2. Fifteen minutes before I changed the tank, they were all looking strong and healthy, and now they all went limp and flopped over. I'm scared to just give them a SECOND fresh tank, since I don't know what the hell went wrong with the first. What's going on? Are they gonna bounce back and strengthen up again, or are they pretty much dead? The stems are so soft now that you can bend them almost 90 degrees without much resistance.

I've never seen such a fast shift from strong to half-dead

Welcome the wonderful world Of hydroponics!!

With hydro, things can go wrong in a hurry.. Thats why alot of people dont rush into the hydro scene. There in shock for some unknown reason. Can you post a few pics.. tell us more about your setup. :)

U shouldnt let the roots stay dry for more than 15-20 min. when changing the tank/ resevior. How long was the tank dry for? I just wanted to second that question since its important

They never were without water--I fill up a second tank, bubbled it out with an airstone for about fifteen minutes, then transferred the net pots+lid to the fresh tank. I'm using a ten gallon Rubbermaid with six gallons in the res usually--it's a Bubbleponics system. I've already had one nice (5.75 oz) harvest from that setup, and I've never seen anything like this.

I'm using a 600w HPS, btw, but I don't think heat is the problem. I tend to place it further from the plants than necessary. Could it have been the temperature of the new tank? It was a little colder than usual, I think. If so, will they survive?

u shouldnt change the root temps to fast to soon. do u have a tank heater and a thermometer for checking liquid temps?

No heater or thermometer, unfortunately. If it was indeed the temperature, will it work itself out as the tank warms up under the HPS, or should I just replace it asap?

i was gunna ask if the new res was cooler, i reckon thats ya prob, jus shocked the girls i reckon. it should warm up under the hps but check it in a few hrs and see if it is or not, if cold then jus add a little warm, u can get floating therms for 2 quid, or stick on aquarium ones for less, may be a gd investment, i will be using one when i run my dwc hopefully to avoid that exact same thing.. i dont think they will die m8 , jus whinge for a bit, typical bitch lol

Hmmm.. I let my roots dry out for a full 45 minutes, then they get sprayed by nutes via a waterpump for 15 minutes.(experimental dwc bucket). There very healthy :)

I wouldnt recommend drying your roots out, maybe thts working for you, but it may be misleading to some of the less experienced growers.

I live in the Far North...

My tap water comes out at about 36F... Every two weeks, when I change res... the plants limp after the first flood (TOO COLD).. but the solution warms up (to 63F) and they recover quickly and without prolonged symptoms...

I also noticed that my clones limped after a MISTAKE in the H2O2 qty.

Too much made them limp...

you say a "SPLASH".. I say get a measuring cup...:lol::razz::

Good Luck...

Thanks for the quick responses, guys! It looks like they're firming up again and reorienting themselves toward the light. I'm guessing it was indeed shock from the cold water--I'll definitely pay more attention to the temperature change next time I switch tanks on them. I let my second hydro tank sit out longer to warm up before I swapped over my second set of plants, and they're pretty much fine.

Since you have the extra res's I would fill-mix-ph them a day or so ahead of time. They can reach room temp and the solution can buffer a bit. Recheck and adjust ph if needed. Then make the switch.

Or you can just show them a pic of 'Jax's avitar and hope they are lesbians! If not, she may just get them to switch teams!!!!!!!!!
