trimming for clearance

ok i was just wondering what you all do for clearance with your mother plants, i'm new to this but if i understand it right you don't ever flower the mothers they just keep growing (right??) well what do you do when they get to close to the lights? i'm gonna be cloning em but i would still think they would get pretty close to the lights and was wondering if you could trim some of the new growth back

i dont keep mothers due to having no place for one over the winter. i would do some LST and tie her down to keep her shorter. also when you clip for clones it makes her shorter of course. i would use daylight cfl's on 18/6 to keep her in veg. and also shorter. i have clones from my firts plants that are flowering now. i did LST with the clones and they are really getting bushy but i keep tieing them down.
