topping

i need to top my plant i have 2 palnts and when they were babys i tryed to topp 2 of them and i only topped one right and the other one is just tall and the nabors and starting to look over to see with they are its tall and about 1 and a haft months aways from budding how far down do i cut to topp it and can you show me some pictures of big plants being topped??
