First off let me say that I never thought I'd be asking such a simple broad question but I am lol... I live on east coast, so I can't just go get winning cuts from my buddies and theres a lot of shitty strains out there that claim to be great but there not, in my past. I dislike nirvana. My problem is Ive been growing the same afghan strain for a year, its not as vigorous as it once was And I'd rather make the process of finding another winner a bit easier. Im out for bag appeal now, specifically smell tho. But of cosrse yeilds and easy to clone. Although no strains perfect but I'm clueless when it comes to reputable breeders. I think I'm looking for a reputable breader and then a strain. I grow on flood tables sog style. Im not a fan of strechy strains but would consider them. Ive heard all the popular names, grand daddy purp, blue dream, sour diesel, cheeses you name it. But is midweek or attitude going to provide a reliable faithful old lady? I feel like im going to just have to order a bunch n test them out. Sounds like a nightmare. Hope there's no rule about sources... Any input in appreciated. Thanks....

Just a heads up, if you are growing from seed you are going to have to test out all of the beans to find that special mother. DJ short comes to a local pharmacy around here to give seminars and when i picked his brain about how many of your seeds should I grow to find that "special mother" he was straightforward when he said 60 +. It's a lot of work sifting through plants to find the one you want but it's also very rewarding when done right. There is a reason why most of the unicorn strains are clone only and have been around for 10+ years. when all that work goes into finding that special mom people go to great lengths to keep it around / protected.

If you are looking for bag appeal, smell is your main goal, and you are growing from, seed I would highly recommend Durban poison. It is on the stretchy side but honestly has the best cerebral high, extremely unique smell, and a taste that matches for a easily accessible strain.

Yes it's true the only way to figure out what strain you like best is to try & grow out a bunch of different seeds & see what's up. There are literally too many good strains to list plus every seed you pop could be a totally different phenotype than the others so it's really trial & error. I tend to veer away from top 10 lists, money making/big bud strains, and hype surrounding some of the more popular strains because in my experience these do not usually live up to the high expectations they are touted to be. Just because some grower won awards doesn't guarantee that your buds will turn out exactly the same. With that in mind here's a few of my favorites that I've grown out several times over the past few years;
HSO Purple Trainwreck
Devils Harvest Strawberry Sour Diesel
Dinafem Critical Jack
Barneys Vanilla Kush

All of these are tried & truly good strains which satisfy my criteria for taste, visual appeal, and yield although I also found through exp that the best yields do not always rate as high for taste or potency. All these are moderate yielders but that's not a bad thing....

Order some Bodhi ... I've ran 3 strains now.. All were home runs, I'm talking about ordering 2 or 3 beans of each strain.. If I've gotta run 60 beans of a strain to find that keeper than the breeder is a bum.

I would say the breeder who created the blueberry strain is anything but a bum / would be very knowledgeable on phenotype selection.

The strains you grew were good, however what do you have as comparison to call that pheno the home run? The bud should be good from any seeds coming from a reputable seed bank. However, good isn't what we're shooting for, best is the ultimate goal when selecting a mom to keep for multiple seasons. If you had a wider pool of genetics within the same strain to pull from you might find one in particular you like better, grows faster, flowers faster, has the right flavor profile, more potent ect.

Long story short his recommendation for 60+ beans doesn't mean he has a inferior product, he just knew what I was looking for good < Best :hump:

I'm starting to think DJ just caught lightning in a bottle with his blueberry.. I get it that you root for the guy, he's a local legend. I'm constantly running new stuff .. And I've never bred anything... This isn't about me, DJ is a better grower and breeder and much more knowledgeable gardener than me.. That said, there are 100 breeders who I'd spend my dough on before DJ.

I grew out a ten pack of his blueberry, I was hoping to find the Blueberry that was all over Oregon in the mid-late 90's when I spent a year in Eugene. .. No luck @ all, lotta intersexual flowers and not one keeper. I'd love to get that BB, unfortunately I don't believe it exists anymore.

It's around... check the link, the OP appears to have a legit cut and I post mine down below. Actually not very hard to find in WA, although lot's of stuff named blueberry floats around that is not the DJ short. This is a classic strain that still holds up pretty well.

I am on the fence, I think you can take a mother, get clones for her, grow those clones different ways, and come out with a better product, smell/look/potency, depending on how it is grown. For example I did a plant last year, I took a few clones, did two in dirt and 20 in an aerobin grow. The stuff that came out of the aerobin was some of the best looking stuff I ever had. Wasn't much color other than lime green and gold buds, but when I opened the bag you sure could tell. The stuff grown in aero smelled amazing and would stink up a house quick, what came out of the dirt lacked big time. I'm no pro by any means, but that stuck with me. The stuff grown in the aerobins I saved for myself and smoked with close friends, it had more trichs, better smell, and was way more potent. I used the same nutes, bloom enhancers etc.

I actually like some of Nirvana's genetics. What have you tried from them that you didn't like? I've grown White Rhino several times from Nirvana and love it.

I just did a RQS Ice. Compact plant with large buds. Really funky smell- stinks.
I haven't smoked it as yet but from the guys that have (older daily smokers) gives it two thumbs up. I found the yield much better than what the description said.
