A while back, NASA launched the DART project to see if we can deflect an asteroid by ramming it's orbiting moonlet and changing the gravitational pull thus redirecting it's course.

Of course this asteroid and orbiting moonlet is coming nowhere near the earth, it's just a test.
On live NASA TV later today.

This asteroid and moonlet passes by every 100 years or so, give or take. And one can only hope we don't redirect it into us during it's next pass around 2122. But we have a 100 years to perfect the technique if we do.
