Time to Grow

Hello all, Load up a bowl, this may take a few minutes. :joint::blsmoke:

My name is “King”, and I plan to start my grow operation. Luckily for me, I am a medical patient, (Washington State) so it makes it easy for me to get seeds and clones, not to mention, technically legal.

So I am a first time grower, so I am still learning how to grow marijuana. I’ve got this book, written by Jorge Cervantes, “medical growers bible.” I’ve learned a lot from reading it. It’s pretty informative. Granted a lot has to do with soil growing, and I’ll be doing hydroponics. But it’s still a great reference book. And of course the wonderful internet has been helpful as well.

What I would like to do here, is to lay out for you, (the “experts”kiss-ass) what I plan to do, and the setup I want to build.

I have yet to buy any items except for a few hydroponic supplies, so I’m still open for change. If any of you have any tips, thoughts about my plans, I am open to suggestions. If you feel I can improve some where or go without something, or I should use a larger water pump, whatever, let me know I’m all ears.

So here’s the plan. I’m sure we’ve all see the “I grow chronic guy” on youtube, green face, you know, the ninja turtle guy. Well I was planning on mimicking his setup a little. Like I want to use a drip system for my clones and mothers, and an ebb and flow system for my flowering room. I plan for my rotation to be every 2 weeks. So every two weeks, I want to be pulling two plants out of the flowing room and placing two new clones in. I want to have 3 mother plants, a different strain each. And the pair of clones I place in on each rotation, will be that of the same mother. I thought about doing 4, to be even with the weeks of flowering, but I think 3 is enough for now. I’ll use clones as starter mothers to get going. Then maybe dapple in a little seed germination later on.

For my vegetative room, I plan to use (2)- 4ft T5 HO fluorescents, a two bulb unit. I was looking at these units on HTG-Supply, they have a 2 bulb, 4ft T5 HO fluorescent unit with bulbs for $50. **If anyone knows if these are crap fixtures let me know** I was planning on use a mix spectrum, (1) 3000k and (1)6400k in each unit. (the bulbs that come with the fixtures.) they are 54watt tubes with 5,000 lumens for a total of 10,000 lumens per fixture. One fixture will be used for my mothers and weeks old vegetating clones, and one will be used for new clones, this way I can raise and lower each one.

The veg room will be in a 2’x6’ standard sliding door closet you’ll fine in most homes. I was planning on putting a 2’x4’ tray inside. I’ll line the inside of the closet with 1mil mylar. **let me know if 2mill is better for some reason** As for my drip system, unlike the guy on “youtube,” my plan is to have two drip systems both with 75GPH pumps and a 13 or 18 gallon reservoir. One system for my mother plants and vegetating clones , and one for the newly made clones. the cuttings. Because the way I see it, from what I have read, you use just plan water on new clones, and after the root system starts to form, you use a mild nutrient solution. If I want to do a 2 week rotation, I don’t see how I’m going to do that with one drip system with one reservoir. So one reservoir and drip system would be for my mothers and weeks old vegetating clones. And the other drip system and reservoir will be used for new clones, and will be switched between just plan water and a mild nutrient solution. ** If someone knows of a better way of doing what I’m talking about, let me know**

I’ll keep my lights on for 18-24 hours, most likely 24 hours a day. As for my drip schedule, I may need a little insight on this, but I’ll use the “youtube guys” regiment as a base point. I’ll water my plants 3 times a day. I’ll adjust it, depending on if my plants get soggy from over watering or too dry from under watering.

As for ventilation, I’m not sure I will need more much then a simple fan. I plan to leave the door cracked a few inches. And I believe the T5’s do put out a little heat, but if I need to heat things up I’ll get a heater. I’ll veg my plants until they are about 1-1/2 – 2ft tall, then into the flowering tent for avg. 8 weeks.

So for my flowering room, I plan to buy a Growlab 145 (4’-9”x4’-9”x6’-7”). I’ll use a 3x3 flood table and I’ll have a 55gallon reservoir to work with. I know I could get away with I next size smaller tent, but if I want to expand to a 4x4 table, I have the capability. I’ll use a 350GPH pump. The flood table is 7” deep, so I’ll be filling it to around 4-5”. I plan to use expanded clay as a medium and I was going on using “smart pots.” I want to use a container so I can rotate the plants. And I heard some good things about fabric pots **correct me if I’m wrong**

I will use a 600watt HPS (C.A.P. – digilux), and a Yield Master 2 - 6” air cooled hood. And a Quantum 600watt ballast. I’ll have a 6” inline fan 435cfm to vent my tent and help regulate heat. I’m gonna use a Phash filter 6x16 for odor control. And or course a fan or two for circulating the air.

As for CO2, I don’t plan on doing a full on “enrichment,” but I want to at least replace the CO2 that is used up and maybe a little more. I don’t plan on buying an CO2 tank and regulator, instead use the “youtube guys” technique of carbonated water in a spray bottle. Plus, every so often (depending on how fast it goes) I’ll get some dry ice, and let that evaporate in the tent, to help create some CO2. I may do enrichment down the line but not right now.

As for curing my buds, I’ll just use a simple cardboard box and hang the herb upside down. and use a few mason jars with airtight lids.

So my setup will be in its own room. With my vegetative room tucked away in the closet, and my grow tent in the up against the back wall. The room is 10’-6”L x 8’-6”W x 7’-5”H. I’ve got a window for ventilation if I need it. And it’s big enough to fit an A/C unit if it get really hot in the summer time. Though is doesn’t get very hot around here much anyways, we mostly get rain.

So if any of you have any suggestions that you think would help me out, please feel free to throw in your 2 cents. I do have some concerned on whether or not I have the right size pumps for my systems. Through reading about ebb and flow, they say not to have your entire run last more then 30mins. So I believe I calculated it out for a 10 minute fill time and 5 minutes at it full level.

I am also wondering about my carbon filter. Whether it would be best to have the air be sucked through the filter, or rather it be pushed out through the filter. My Idea was to have the fan and filter and the same ducting as the reflector hood. but I’m worried about the hot air being pushed through the filter if I choose that route. Would it be better for the odor control duct work be a separate system, then the ducting and fan system I use to cool the bulb and control the temperature in the tent. ** I may find an answer to thins in another forum**

Plus, if anyone had any insight on whether it would be better for the carbon filter to be outside the tent, opposed to inside. Because I was thinking, if I was also going to be using the room (mainly the closet) to cure my buds, I am want to have the filter out in the main part of the room to catch all of the odor in the room as a whole.

Another question is, being that I will be doing my flowering in a grow tent and my vegging in the closet, given the room size, and that I’m only flowering in the tent, would I need to have a constant flow of fresh air from outside, or would there be enough in the room, combined with the cracks in the doors that would allow air to come in from other parts of the house. I could even crack the door open from time to time if needed. And the heat that I pulling off on my lamp, would it be enough to just vent it outside the tent, out into the room and the rest of the house, or should I go straight out the window with it. I’ve read a few different things about this, but nothing conclusive that I could find, that would emulate the setup I wish to have. Mainly people who have converted entire rooms to a flowering room.

Well, this is pretty much my setup I wish to accomplish. Let me know what you think, or if you want me to elaborate on anything (incase I missed something) Thanks for reading my long winded post. I sure hope you’re really stoned by now.
