the scum's giving me hard times

hi all
first post here, so let me say hi and thanks for all the great info lying around here.
i've grown several times in soil (well, not really - lava rock / perlite / peat mix), with good results.
now i'm takin it indoors, and built up a little ebb-flow system in a closet.
problem is, i keep getting scum and really bad smells in my reservoir.

anyone got any idea how to fix this?

by the way - not growing anything yet in this hell-water. just running the system before i put the plants in.

thanks,

check your ph and introduce a small amount of peroxide. it is also a good idea to keep an airstone in your reservoir to keep water from going stagnant, the next thing you may start seeing is fungus gnats, they can be killed with thuricide, remember to use a capfull per gallon your roots will love the extra o2 from the h2o2 and from the airstone

good luck

is the reservoir darkened enough that NO light can get into it? if not algae will build up. if there is a lid you have to make sure that no light can get in around the are anywhere that connects to the actual container itself.

thanks for the replies.

i think i'll redo the light sealing before i start going over the top and adding peroxide and stuff.
waffle -
what do you mean the nutes? i'm using an organic hydro solution. don't have it next to me right now, so i don't have the exact brand, but it's proper hydro-designated stuff.
is organic more prone to problems than chem?
more info please...

That shit won't stink if you keep it moving (aerate) the living piss out of it and no light leaks.
