I'm planning to buy leds for a custom growlamp. Price woulde be for 100 pieces about 15$ for 5mm 12000mcd (red 630 nm) (blue 470) Thera are also ultraviolet 400nm leds for about 20$. Would these be good or is it a must to get:

Beta-carotene 450nm 480-485nm dual peak
chlorophyll a 430nm 662nm dual peak
chlorophyll b 453nm 642nm dual peak
phycoerythrin 590nm single peak
phycocyanin 625nm single peak

670nm and 700nm for the Emerson effect.

Getting 8-10 different leds is really expensive and I'm only gonna do this if its a must or if the benefits are huge.

My 90 watt full spectrum led lamp has red 660nm and blue 455nm lights. I don't know if this helps. I bought mine on amazon for $125, its great for two plants. I've had to supplement with cfls (300 watts) for three other plants I have growing. The 2 under the led are bushy and big if you consider 15 inches each, 5 weeks from seedlings, a good size. I plan on buying another one of these when I can.

If you are making your own led, make sure you go with a higher wattage then the 90 watt lamp I have. That way you can have more then 2 plants under the led lamp. I wish I could have afforded more at the time, but I do not regret buying the one I have. Its been good so far for this newb. good luck, and I would love to see your lamp when you finish building it!

It helps a bit. How many blue and red leds has the lamp and do you know how much watts the leds use? I'm still not sure if I should get 1,2 or 3 watt leds. I've read that red and blue are needed for the growth and more red is needed to simulate fall. Your lamp should have more blue then red light since they get bushy. Your lamp seems to only produce light for chlorophyll b, then maybe the rest isnt really needed.

Does somebody know if grow lamps can work with normal low energy 5mm leds or are high power leds a must?
