Hello Rollitupers:bigjoint:!

I got some Afghani beans coming from northern Afghanistan. It's a pure landrace so we can expect a lot of diversity.
These plants are said to have extremely broad leaves and a wide array of smells and flavors including that old road kill skunky smell. This is what I'm after.. :razz:

The goal is to do a selection and find some outliers. I'm hoping to find some of these old school skunky phenos but if there are some other, super unique phenos, that could be interesting too...

Ultimately, I would like to stabilize a great, unique smell/taste so that it will breed true for that trait.

@Aladdin.khalifa - that teaser pic is looking great for 3 days in! How many beans did you pop? Definitely going to watch your grow!

Here are the seedlings 8 days after germination.
They were transplanted yesterday from the seedling tray they were in to some opaque plastic cups. So far so good. Most of them are vigorous. What surprises me is how dark the leaves are! :shock:

They are growing in some biobizz light mix and have not been fed yet. For now they are growing under T5 but they will be under a 600w HPS as soon as I flip them to 12/12.

I'm planning on flipping them to flower in 4 to 6 days since the goal is only to find some great phenos no to grow out some big plants. They could be growing faster in a hydro setup but I believe that growing them organically is better for the selection process (Smell and Taste-wise).

Cool thread! Just a question, I always thought being an IBL meant that the strain was true breeding? Wouldn't that mean you should expect less diversity?

Just curious...look forward to seeing how these rare beauties turn out!

I got 20 from northern Afghanistan back in August have some in flower now.

Thank you man! Yes you are right! If you select some plants for the same traits over many generations, at some point the offspring will breed true for these trait. (Meaning they will be homozygous for the genes that code for these traits). Thus, the diversity and variability go down and all the plants start looking more and more like each other.

The Afghans I'm working with are not IBL. It's a landrace strain with a lot of genetic diversity and the goal is to do a thorough selection process in order to lock in specific traits. (:
