Different regions and countries in the world have different cultures, cuisines and traditions. This is obvious, well known and often reflected in the purchasing choices people make; people buy anything from steel to coffee to electronics from different places because of quality, price and necessity. But when it comes to marijuana and cannabis seeds, people often forget that country of origin makes a difference. We have a look at some of the most famous areas of the world for cannabis use and production.
Acapulco
Most people in the world have heard of Acapulco Gold, though some don’t know exactly what it is or think it’s a precious metal. Acapulco Gold is actually a strain of cannabis known for its potency as compared to other varieties. Originally only from the area around Acapulco, this marijuana strain started out being called “Gold” because of the yellow/golden colour of its leaves. However, the quality and premium nature of the marijuana it produces lead to a high price, and the “Gold” moniker came to represent this high class nature rather than the colour. The higher than normal level of THC (the main psychoactive substance in cannabis) in Acapulco Gold has made seeds from this marijuana strain a hot commodity.
America
You wouldn’t think that America, with its bizarre categorisation of marijuana and hard line views on the drug, would be a good place for cannabis. But you’d be wrong. One part of California in particular is famous for being the pot capital of the US. An area called the Emerald Triangle in northern California is the country’s largest area of cannabis production. It started as a cottage industry, where anyone with a few marijuana seeds and a garden had a small stash for themselves and perhaps a little money on the side. Today the industry has become much more commercial (though still illegal) and has spread across this part of California. The Emerald Triangle is perfect for the purpose because of the mild climate and vast stretches of secluded landscape for growing away from prying eyes.
Jamaica
Jamaica has a long history with marijuana dating back over 150 years. The island is often associated with ganja (cannabis) thanks to connections with Rastafarianism and famous proponents of marijuana use such as Bob Marley and the Wailers. While cannabis use isn’t as endemic as popular culture might have you believe (it is technically illegal in the country), it is a definite part of the country’s culture, and often a component of Rastafarian rituals and religious practices. Those who follow the religion see marijuana as a powerful substance that opens people’s minds and aids meditation, and Rastafarianism champions ganja use over the consumption of alcohol or use of other drugs.
These are just three areas of the world that have strong links to marijuana and where planting marijuana seeds is an alternative to planting other crops for cash or personal use. However, there are many more, with many new strains of varying potency being developed every year.

Yeah, this "article" is pretty mediocre. He's re-purposing it from another site (article base) onto his site (progressive gatherings), then posting it here to drive traffic to his site...ugh.

IMO, that excerpt is dated and worthless.

The USA is as big as all the countries in Western Europe put together, and generalizing that way is not meaningful, IMO. There are still plenty of cannabis UNFRIENDLY parts of the USA, where possession or cultivation will get you a stiff criminal penalty.

I'd say best place on the planet for cannabis right now is (arguably) Colorado, where recreational use limited cultivation and possession are all now legal, and there is a thriving scene of breeding, growing, culture, and concentrates. In the USA Washington, California and Oregon probably come next in that order.

Cannabis has been decriminalized in Mexico now, but that doesn't make it a great cannabis "tourism" destination (let alone a center of great breeding or high quality), and the best cannabis in Mexico probably comes from Oaxaca, not Acapulco.

In Europe, Spain is probably the #1 place for cannabis now. Cannabis is effectively legal to possess and grow on private property there, and most of the breeding/seedmaking in Europe is going on in Spain now. Holland is probably #2, and dropping. While legalization/decriminalization has been going on elsewhere, Holland in particular, has a relatively new Conservative gov't, and has actually been cracking down on soft drug sales. Legal sales to foreigners in Amsterdam is supposed to stop next year, though whether or not it actually happens remains to be seen. (Some in the know say it won't).

Jamaica is historically known for cannabis, but its still illegal there, tourists WILL get busted for possessing/smoking it, and at this point I don't think anything going on in Jamaica holds a candle to the legal grows/breeding/variety in the USA or Europe.

At one point Cambodia was probably "the" cannabis capital of Asia. . .although technically illegal, there was effectively zero enforcement and gigantic bags of buds could be had at the open market for pennies. Cannabis-laced "happy" pizza was sold to tourists at local parlors, etc. My understanding is that while its still readily available, enforcement has been stepped up and the penalties for possession are now steep.

Once again Jogro trumps what the OP said with a thorough and thoughtful response. His first line sums this 'article' up perfectly. "IMO, that excerpt is dated and worthless." Nice. By the way, when is the book coming out, Jogro, you wealth of information?

That's flattering, thanks.

I've never actually considered writing a book on cannabis before, but now that you suggest it, I think it could be a lot of fun. There probably is room for a good book specifically on medical cannabis aimed at the general public.

I think I could probably find a publisher, but putting the bong away for a minute, actually getting it done would be pretty hard. . .(I have a "real" job, and I'm pretty busy in the "real world").

Yeah, it's hard to find time but...Do It. I want a copy when it's published. Fair?

LOL. . .if I get it published (chance of which approximates zero), I'll invite you to the private publication party. . .which could only be held in Colorado, I suppose!

And let us not forget the true gems coming out of Africa

And let us not forget the true gems coming out of Africa

Well, Africa is an entire continent!

There are definitely great genetics to be had there; in particular, the African landrace strains are known for psychedelic/heart-racing high THCV levels (eg Malawi, Durban, Swazi, etc).

In particular, from what I've heard there is good stuff to be had in South Africa, and supposedly its relatively inexpensive (especially the local outdoor grown landrace stuff), but its still illegal and SA itself isn't the most friendly place.

So despite the genetics, its just not clear to me that there is a real "scene" there that equates to anything that's going on in Amsterdam, or LA, let alone Denver or Boulder, where a guy can walk in off the street, and pick from 10 different kinds of top notch buds or 5 kinds of hash off a menu, sit down and smoke it, with no hassle.
