Teeny black flies

Today I readjusted my bottom lights and found a rather large collection of teeny tiny black flies that had been zapped by my lights. I noticed some hovering around my soil. Ive been noticing sick fan leaves (mostly bottom ones), and today found the dead fly evidence. These guys were so small they almost appeared like ashes till I took a better look. Good news is a lot are dead, bad news is what are these, and how do I keep them from reappearing?

Gnats.....:leaf:

Don't over water. Most effective.
You can put a layer of sand over the top of the soil.
You can use Mosquito dunk...which i have found works a little.
Yellow stick strips or simular to catch the adults
Need to break the life cycle is the key.

sounds like fungus gnats

when i had them once, i just laid one of those yellow fly strips on the planter rim

and one of those hanging twirly sticky traps

they all got stuck in a couple of days
