I'm super new to growing, and my first attempt yielded a tiny little plant that promptly died on me. I've been getting some good tips from friends, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I know I have a prob with the lighting - I'm using a 15w flourescent - but I'm always tight on cash and prefer the cheaper options to horticultural liberation. I've also been using shitty soil (well, not LITERALLY shitty), so I know that's a prob. If anyone can give me an outline for starting out, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm only looking to grow one plant for personal/group use. An outline of what I need to get started would KICK ASS!!! Thanks guys and gals (female growers are HOT.)

well... for a cheap setup...

1. CFL's - 42 watt or higher is good, 3-4+ for one plant, depending on height grown.

2. PC fans.

3. DIY carbon filter

4. Miracle Gro - do some perlite with this, it's cheap.

5. Bag seed.

6. DIY CFL reflectors

7. Present wrap with silver side for reflection

i have 1 piece of advice......

start with a decent light, go get a 400 or a 600 watt light, preferably a universal hps/halide.. check ebay if cost is an issue..... the light is what will supply results when everything else is done correctly.. otherwise you can bust your butt on growing and never enjoy the fruits of your labor...

then go with simple soils, reg seeds until you feel your way around.. and most importantly, enjoy the learning and growing with your plants.. its alot of fun.... and you (like every1) will make mistakes, but stay with it, you'll get it..

He is tight on cash, so cfl is probably his best option.

not really, u could have the option of buying like... 3x 125w CFLs for like £90. u can get a 400w hps with ballast for £80.

if ur tight on cash then id suggest nothing. u need more lighting.

get more lights and ventilation.

u want a fan blowing, to blow some of the heat away, air circulation and for the leaves on ur plant to be wobbling a little, this is so the plants can grab all the c02 bcoz its gonna use all the c02 around the leaf within about 20 minutes. so keep air flow nice an cool.

basicly its already been said. read the FAQ at top of the page and the stickies. and get more lighting!

dude, i had the same problem - noone understands. to get a plant going stick like a normal 60 watt bulb over it for heat . like 30degrees c but dont measure it just stick your hand in and make sure its warm . to be honest ive found it so difficult i can only get them going in a small cupboard. 2 weeks and they should by away them stick your grow light over it and some fresh . must people use HPS light so they dont even find out about the heat problem. from the the cradle to the grave baby , word up

Basically read the GrowFAQ.
Then read it again.
Then read it one more time..

People dislike regurgitating information for people who aren't willing to research it themselves.

We're not here to spoon feed you..

walk down the street, kick a light post, and walla u got a hps light.!!! they are everywhere. i stole 20 400w lights from a big lot...the are expensive if u buy them. but cheap if u steal them. and they are EVERYWHERE . even metal halides are everywhere.

I grew this under three 2-tube each 12$ shoplights, w/ two other plants.
I strive to grow as close to actually free weed as possible. Got about 3 ounces, cured, off the three fixtures, screwed together . . . 40w CoolWhite, I believe. That's a little low for my grows, but I tried some new things from RIU on the two other plants this time. I'd like to have "real" lights, but I've done fine for stash growing w/these . . . for probably 30 years? Might have 2-300 bucks invested in those few pounds of great weed, probably less?

In the old days, I got the fixtures at K-mart . . . now, W-Mart. Damn, I've come a long way!
Of course, lighting options have changed and much better harvests can be reaped these days. But I'm happy as a clam w/what I got.
Here's a few recent pics, obviously pre-harvest.

1st two, Mama re-veg others, RIU companions (non-topped,etc.)
