Look at the top back of the hood and you'll see some vent slits. There is a small circle vent here with a plastic tab--this tab locks the light hood to the pole. Use a screwdriver to release the hood and lift it off the light pole. It is easy if you have a friend to help as one person can release the tab and hold the unit down while the other person lifts the hood off. It can take a little wiggling, but that's the release for the light hood.
You might be able to rest the hood on some supports, but you can also rig it so that you suspend it with chains. Last, you can buy a figure 8 cable to power the light hood by itself. That is, plug the hood into the new cord/timer and use that timer to control the lights.
