300w led or 2ft t5 (4or8 bulb)
to veg a month
Which will produce less heat ?
And which is most cost efficient to run 18/6

Tryna decide first if the 300w will suffice or if I should go T5.

looking to keep electric cost down as well as heat.

Flower tent 400whps

Just want a place to start seeds and veg about a month then flower tent for a week or 2 before flip.

You might not like my answer but here goes. Since you have the 400w hps why not veg under a Blue MH? Would be the most cost effective for you and then a bulb swap and you're done for flower if you deem necessary flowering under the blue bulbs works too....... I just did a vert grow with a Blue 600W MH.

That is if your ballast will fire it up and the reflector you own works with it not sure on your current setup.

i will veg with T5 is more cost effective and then flower with the 400hps. Or veg with led and flower with the hps. cost effective!!

T5. I am no fan of cheap Chinese LEDs and I have a Mars hydro 600 W. The Chinese LEDs are okay for Veg but T8s are almost as good and T5s are better.

A few people here like Vipar Spectras from China. Buy American COB LEDs or make your own from Timber Lights or others.

For Veg? Get a T5. If you want to amp it up then add a cheap 2 bulb T8 from Wal Mart for $10.97 + $7.88 for bulbs. Side light with the T8. It uses about 64 watts and you get almost 6,000 lumens. They are very cool to the touch too.

I do not use a tent and use soil. Other posters may be a better source of info. Is it one plant or a few? Try for three or four weeks and post some pics.

The nice thing with T5 is you can get close to the plant without burning it.

i figure i plant 5 seeds and toss males so prolly 2/3 plants in 10 gal coco/perlite mix, i want to LST and scrog so ill even work with just 1. i was thinking week1 and 2 with t5 at 18/6 in week 3 hour down each day until 12/12 then switch too hps or should i hour down in week 2 with t5. this is going to be my first grow and im goal oriented to max yield but dont want to loose quality

T5s run cooler and are more efficient than the cheap Chinese led grow lights and will likely work better for sprouting seeds and vegging. if your flowering with hps than your probably not considering high end cobs

sorry I meant to say T5s were more effiecient than cheap chinese grow light which is why they produce less heat and more light for the same amount of power. you can find inexpensive fixtures on e-bay that work well.many people use them to veg than switch to HPS for flowering.

I usually veg for 6 weeks from seed or until the plant gets 12 inches tall but I top and train my plants. how tall you let them get in veg depends on how much room you have. plants can double or triple in height during flowering. at 12 inches in veg they can finish at 30-36 inches at harvest

I also have a Mars II 700 it's a 350 watt LED I was trying to use for vegging my plants, It was going very very slow tried adjusting lower-higher etc... ended up just getting a 6 bulb T5 just because it was the perfect size for my area. Night and day difference that's just my experience with the Mars Hydro LED.

Yeah. I am not impressed. They are even worse in flower. A waste of money. People et conned by Amazon reviews for these cheap Chinese LED lights. T8s are weak but if I hit them with 300 watts of T8s (that is a lot of T8s) versus 300 watts of a Mars Hydro - I am sure the T8s would win. T5s are obviously even better.

Lots of guys in the T5/CFL thread/forum who swear by T5s for veg and flower. . I also really do not like Metal Halide (verg) HPS lights. I think they can cause skin cancer or are like sun exposure to your skin but worse. Sodium HPS for flower is not as bad. LECs are great but I would avoid going in a room with a LEC on.
