I'm new to all this but wattage doesn't necessarily mean better plants. Its about lumens per/sf. I just made the mistake of putting a 600w in too small of a space. Got to hot and wilted the plants. Wish I would of gone with a 400w HPS or CFLs. Theres a formula to figure out lumens per sq/ft. So techinally if you got the tube cool enough you could put a 600w inches above a plant like with flouros...you would run into bleaching problems.

i got 2 250w cfls in there now but i never even heard of bleaching a whole new problem to worry about

Yes, 600w would be too hot even if you were venting it well. I'd go 400w at most, maybe even 250w. As far as distance of light over plants, get it as close to the plants as possible without burning them. Do the hand test. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your plants. Do you have any air flow/ventilation in that box?

600 watts would be overkill. 250 would be ideal imo. you wouldn't need seperate ventilation for the light, and temps would be MUCH easier to manage and you'd proly get better results than a hot, overpowered 600W cabinet.

yeah i got ventilation i have an inline fan sucking air out the top through a carbon filter and an inline fan blowin cool air into the bottom.that pic is when i was building the box.also i have 2 250w lights at the moment if i get a 400w would that be less light?cheers for the help +rep..how close can you get a 400w hps with cooltube and ventilation?

loose the tin foil from the walls and just paint flat white.
also get a fan.

you could always give it a trail run and see what temps get to.
but i think a 600 would be to hot unless you put in good air flo.

it may be.
but it isnt straight and that will cause heat pockets.
just paint flat white, it cooler and the light reflects better because its straight.

if i get a cool tube will that not get rid of nearly all the heat?+rep for the help

yes from a cool tube that will cause hardley any heat.
but still get a fan blowing.
plants need air flo to help remove plant toxins like the wind would outside.
flos are best for vegging
and hps are best for 12/12
maybe just start off with flos and when your ready for 12/12 get a hps and have 2 closets one for vegg with flos
and one for 12/12 with hps.

i can say with 100% certainty you can fit a 600watt hps in their on a cool tube with a 250cfm fan cooling it and induce zero extra heat into the room as long as the intake air is 70f or lower.
i run a 39"L X 39"W X 79"H with a 1000watt HPS and a cool tube cooled with a 250cfm fan and it sits 4 inches above my canopy.
i also use another 250cfm fan to vent the room itself and my temps range from 70f night time to 78f day time lights running 24/0
