Suggestions as to which Hydro set-up?

Lurker coming out of "lurk mode". I have been absorbing as much as possible the past few weeks and still I am confused as to which hydro set-up to commit to.

I have admired all that Roseman and Purpdaddy have contributed to this forum with their Bubbleponics, etc.

My thoughts as to why I would not want to do Bubbleponics:

1. Small setup - seems plants would grow into each other meaning for a smaller scale...I'm not trying to grow a huge garden but will probably be using a 600w HPS so this setup may seem small?

2. Males - seems like I could really screw up the ladies when removing the males from the system?

3. Power - I live in the mountains and occassionally we have extended periods of time of power outages due to wind, snow storms. If roots are submerged in the water and I am out skiing and the power goes out I would imagine I would come home to plants that have drown? Do you all put the air pumps on a UPS?

I have contemplated ebb and flow for the apparent low maintenance, etc.

Any help would be much appreciated and thanks to everyone on this site for schooling me...this is my first hydro attempt that has yet to be started as I figure out the final plan...
