Starting a tent grow and have a few questions

I recently found a tent on amazon.com that looks to be about right in my price range. http://www.amazon.com/Mylar-HYDROPONIC-48x48x76-HYDRO-GYO1008/dp/B002V9PBXO
I have a 1000 watt hps light and will most likely be using 3 or 5 gallon buckets with rockwool. Nutrients i will be using will be Fox Farms Big Bloom Tigers Bloom and Grow Big. I will also be using a PH up and down kit that is advertised with the tent on amazon.com's page.

My Questions are....

What would yall suggest as a growing medium because i am skeptical of the rockwool. Also any advice if rockwool is a good medium would be helpful?

Second, in the tent i am looking for fans to place in it and was curious of a cheap type that would be great for exhausting and intake. Also a type of Carbon filter that i could purchase?

Third, about how many plants would fit in the 4x4x7 ft area with a good amount of work space?

Lastly, i have read about a hood you can buy for the HPS lights that reduce heat so much the plant can basically touch it. If this is real where might i go about finding one?

Thanks and ill be awaiting your feedback. Toke on RIU

Rockwool works.
I use it when I'm out of my coco plugs.

A 1000 watt light in a cheap grow tent???
I'd be careful.
The plastic in those tents if heated up tend to give off some type gas that kills your plants.
It's something that read, maybe they've fixed the problem.
Either way, definitely get a cool tube if your gonna use a 1000 watt in there.

Personally I would only use a 400 watt in there.
Stick a 90 cfm fan on top, and open up one those openings at the bottom for a passive intake.

Thanks man only reason i am using the light is because i am being given it and my budget is very low atm. Only around $210 and can add 60 dollars a week as time goes by which im thinking of using a box fan for the time being to keep air flow over the plants and then using the 90 cfm fan that you suggested to vent once i start flowering since smell is not so much an issue till then. As for the the lighting if i find out that this protective heat shield is out there somewhere i am def going to be investing in one ASAP, but you are most likely right that i should switch down to 400 watt. Thanks again for your info :)

I would use a soilless mix for my first grow.

I got a cheap fan/filter combo from HTGsupply.com, there are also tons of DIY filters on this site.

In that space, 4-16 plants, depending on how you grow them.

I agree with bongjuice when it comes to the 400.

The easy way is to use 50% promix/Sunshine, 25% coco and 25% worm castings. If you can't find the worm castings add more coco.

If you use worm castings you don't need and ferts. Just add and water. Lots on the web about worm castings and the increased growth 20 to 40%

You have 112 sq. feet so you need a fan that will move at least 75 cfpm. You need to change the air evey 2 minuets or better. Always buy a little more fan that you need.

Third, about how many plants would fit in the 4x4x7 ft area with a good amount of work space?

Depends how long you veg and the plant is it indica or sitavia? Short answer is 20, 4 staggered rows of 5 each. 12" tall to 16". You could plant 50 8" but the yeald would be the same but the risk goes up. The less plants the less hassle if busted.

Air cooled tubes and reflectors are a great way to get ride of heat you can find them at hydro shops and on line they run from 80 to 400$.

Peace

Yeah bud, a 1000W HPS in there, if it doesn't melt the plastic, will be WAY too hot for your plants. If you are looking at a cooltube, expect to add at least $100 for that and another $100 for a GOOD fan to move the air through it. It will add significant drag on the system so you need to overcompensate. The fan is your most important part besides lighting. I wouldn't even think of growing in a tent that size with a HID with less than a 200+ CFM fan.

Look up inline duct fans. There's a 200CFM that's quiet you can get for $20.

I have this exact one.

Also, that tent looks like pretty poor build quality. It may have light leaks and fall apart. I'm not a shill, but I just got an amazing tent from www.htgsupply.com and it's fucking awesome. $130 shipped - you're gonna spend more on that amazon one after tax and shipping

(this one)

lastly, how are you going to afford a $150 tent and a 1000W lighting system + fan with $200? I would say you are looking at a minimum $400 investment after really considering everything like nutes, tools, soil / hydro setup etc. probably more if you just buy everything on amazon. I trust ebay more than the random sellers there - few consequences for ripping people off on their "marketplace."

I have a cheap ebay tent with a 1000w aircooled 6" daystar hood and one 8" fan cooling my hood and scrubbing my tent air all in one. My temps are only 5 degrees hotter inside tent then the ambient temp outside the tent...Right now my tent temp is 81 degrees......yesterday this time it was 77 degrees.

Nothing is melting off the walls.... If you dont do it right yes you might melt some shit but it can be done im doing it ......... now once summer hits and its 100 degrees outside i wont be doing it ill be waiting for summer to end.
