SpringTails.. Pests?

Basically they appear as tiny little white maggots that jump like fleas and burrow quickly into the soil when disturbed.
Apparently they are the outcome of having a good soil culture going on, they disperse nitrogen and are beneficial to plants.
I also read, however, that they produce larva that eat root material and may cause root rot.
Do you think this is a myth? Anyone ever had any experience with these?

You may even have them without knowing, because you need to strain your eyes in order to observe them.

I noticed that 3 or 4 pots were infested in the bugs whereas the other 15 or so seem to be free of them?
Which seems strange - they are quite capable of jumping several inches, therefor I expected mass infestation.
So being the inexperienced grower that I am, I isolated the infected pots to prevent the spread of these critters.

I'm unsure if these "springtail" bugs are devastating or beneficial to a crop?
The infected potters hold plants that are obviously stunted in growth and dying, but i'm unsure if the bugs are the cause, as they were already defective plants when i transplanted them.

What is your opinion on these springtail bugs? I've read positives and negatives about them.
Indoor growing with various spiders, mosquitos, wood louce, a house centipede.. now maggot-fleas? I need a kit-kat.
