Peat based soil has a better CEC than Coco does, nearly double in fact.
However, coco is infinitely more forgiving when it comes to watering. In fact, many growers starting out with soil often don't get watering practices right and, as a result, never see the benefits of the extra CEC.
I like to recommend that people start off with coco-based soils, running only 1 or 2 pots of peat-based soils. This allows you to get practice in with proper watering in a peat-based soil, while also guaranteeing good results from the pots with coco-based soils.
