You can use a ring of rock salt, the slug and snail bait, or you can try the copper tape/strip (comes on a roll) that you put up around your plant. There are other methods as well, I've tried the beer thing, though, and it didn't work. I've always wanted to try the electricity thing, just hook up a car battery with electrodes pushed into the soil, I hear that's a good way to gather up nightcrawlers, too. The juice just drives them right out of the ground.

When I was a kid my dad had us gather up all the biggest garden snails we could find. Then, we put them in an old Habitrail and fed the snails cornmeal for two weeks. At the end of two weeks Dad took the snails, dropped 'em in a pot of boiling water, and they came out of their shells. Take the meat, put it into a mushroom cap, top it with garlic butter and parsley. Bake til the mushies are just done, and enjoy.

I don't think slugs can be enjoyed this way.
