hey guys unfortunately i cant post pictures but
one of my seedlings is growing very long.. i assume this is a problem?
im growing green o matic using a 400 watt hps set up.

so the question is why is it growing so tall?

and how soon should i give the seedling light once it sprouts from the soil?

Thanks!

as soon as it sprouts put it under lights.
and you want the lights to be as close as they can without burning it.

if he is stretching the lights must be very far away.

Maybe just get CFL's or a T5 and put them real close along with the HPS.
The lights spectrum should help, and they won't stretch so much.

unfortunately i cant get any other lights right now as im flat out broke :(
but im deffinatly thinking of investing in some cfls for vegatative. since im growing autoflowering strains due to grow room size i presumed the hps should do fine :(

Upload some pics if you can, maybe it's not stretching as much as you think it is.

Yeah, your 400 is prob too warm to move it much closer...hope they do ok for ya.....I'm currently growing 3 GOMs...still in seedling stage under T5.....Looking forward to see if they're worthy of adding to my fav auto growing.....

thats not that bad of stretch, some seedling just do that. high temps can cause stretch as well. what is the temp under the light? how deep did you plant the seed?did you plant directly into soil or did you germinate them first? once it gets a decent pair of leaves you could move that light a bit closer. is your grow space completely dark during the night cycle? dim light can cause stretching as well as hermies. i dont know if hermies are an issue with autos, but you definitely dont want stretch with a 400w

I myself never put seedlings in that big of pot. I use the 16 ounce plastic beer cups. If your little seedlings get so stretched that they want to fall over. Take a plastic straw and cut it 3/4" longer then the seedling, then split the straw on one side, place the seedling inside the straw and stuff the straw into the soil 1". I always use Daylight CFL's on my seedlings and I hardly ever get stretching. Some strains just like to stretch. If you had used the plastic cups, once you go to transplant, you just plant them an inch of two deeper in the ground.

temperate is proabably around 21/22 degrees, not deep at all the length of the seed down in to the soil and lightly covered with soil.
yes darkness is maintained. oh and yes i planted directly in to the soil.
we posted at the same time :)

thanks!

looks like its stretching for light.... but then again your light looks in the perfect range, was it up higher before??

Also HPS isn't ideal for young seedlings, especially for just 2. you can save alot of electric money, by just using 1-42watt 6500K CFL per sprout. keep it 1-2" from the top. then when it grows a few nodes, transfer to the HPS. you can veg like 8+ plants under that HPS. seems like such a waste of energy to use it to veg 2.

HPS light causes stringy growth so (I Guess it may have caused this)

That is that 2000k-3500k flower light will make stringy plants

5000k- 7000k vegging light will grow wider leafs and thinker stems

although i have seen many people use a HPS for the entire grow without problems
