Sand or small pebbles - which is better to mix with soil?

Those are the two things I'm thinking would be good to help the roots breath and stuff, I don't think I can find any perlite (looked everywhere, not ordering it off the internet) so something DIY will have to do. I'm wondering if anybody else has experience with mixing either of those into your soil? Pebbles seem better to me in theory but everyone seems to use sand. Thanks a lot.

I've never used either, I use coco and perlite. Sometimes hydroton at the bottom of the pots depending on how I plan to feed.
But given the choice I would go with pebbles instead of sand. Make sure you disinfect and rinse them thoroughly before use.

IF you can find suitable pebbles having both correct PH and suitable mineral composition then they would work fine...... But it's easier to find perlite or hydroton. Perlite should be available at ANY garden store.
