My protocol for breeding selection
I typically pop between 25 to 100 seeds per filial generation.
First Culling - 3 weeks (Vegetative) - Samples are culled by size, growth rate and leaf shape. (abnormal growth pattern plants are removed usually; except for albino and polyploids)
I restrict movement to the next stage to 25 plants
I only allow 3 weeks vegetative growth in a Filial run.
Second Culling - Week 3 (flower) - Flower size, shape and preliminary terpene profile are examined. Males are culled down to 1 or 2 depending on pollen sac maturity.
Day 28-34 Pollination - male is removed (typically I extract the pollen and discard) However, if the male has trichomes he gets a free ride to revert to vege in a separate building. (I have smoked and gotten stoned off a dude plant...it's a thing).
Final Culling - Week 6 (Flower) - By this time terpenes are in high gear and I can scale down the ladies to the ones I want to make it. I do pay attention to leaf color a bit, however, anthocyanins are not an indicator of potency, terpene content or cannabinoid profile.
I harvest the seeds by killing the plant and drying it. I keep humidity very low for these plants when drying around 30% RH.
Seeds are then sorted, abnormal seeds or cracked ones are removed.
Then I place them in a parchment paper bag in a airtight container with a humidity gauge and desiccant.
I use 1:1 ratio for descant pellets to eppendorf tubes
Final Thoughts: I only use cheap bulk top soil, basic amendments and 1 gallon pots for filial runs. Nothing special. I only smoke a bit of the crop to verify my analysis of the week 6 flowers.
For any new growers reading this. Don't get sucked into the hype of seed branding. It's just a name. Find a fire plant and grow it.
I have grown 3 types of OG Kush and they were all different...some sucked. Others only 1 plant met the "wow" factor.
Lastly, don't judge you plant quality based off breeder picks. Grower skill, environment VPD etc is key and you may have a different outcome.
Best of luck on your path!
