Sacrifice Lumens for temp?

hi, new to the form, have a question, i built 2 hoods for my mh and hps lights,both 400w, positioned right next to each other they do a great job in keeping the temp down but i got a light meter and i think im sacrificing a lot of lumens it reads about 1000 at the top of the plant both bulbs are hanging down vertical insode the hoods think if i reposition them horizontal it would increase lumen output? anyone have a light meter how many lumens are at the top of your plants? and whats the temp up there? thanks
