My Old Man was born, with the goddamdest red hair, down South 1n 1923 and was named Rudolph. Not only that, his middle name was Valentino. His family came up from the South to settle in Buffalo. According to my Grandmother, my Grandfather got tired of running moonshine over the hills in the Western part of North Carolina and decided it was easier to bring speed boat loads across the Niagara River, so they moved into a rough neighborhood. Then, in 1937, the song "Rudolf The Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released, touching off a string of spectacular fist-fights, after which my father was called "Red" by everyone except his mother and mine.
